Some Bollywood films are not only just movies, they stay in people’s hearts. Manmohan Desai’s evergreen Coolie, released in 1983, is one of those films. At that time, Amitabh Bachchan was at the peak of his career and the audience loved him deeply. They saw him not only as a superstar, but as a hero who truly belonged to them. Coolie carries that same energy, and the tragedy linked to this film makes it even more emotional.

The story of the film is simple, actionable, emotional and warm. The hero, Iqbal, works as a coolie at a railway station. He is happy, fun loving , funny and lives a straightforward life. His world is his mother Salma, his girl friend Julie D’Costa and Sunny and also the other coolies at the station. Iqbal had lost his mother in a train travel when he was a child and years later, life brings him back to her. The villain, Zafar, is a greedy man, hungry for power and money. He treats people and even the whole railway station as if everything belongs to him. The film moves forward with drama, action, emotion and a touching reunion. (1983 Coolie movie Amitabh Bachchan)

Rati Agnihotri looked perfect as Julie. Rishi Kapoor brought charm and fun as Sunny Khan. Waheeda Rehman, Prem Chopra, Kader Khan, Goga Kapoor, Shoma Anand, Amrish Puri, Puneet Issar and Suresh Oberoi added strength to the story.

The film’s music is still evergreen. All the songs were written by Anand Bakshi and the music was composed by Laxmikant and Pyarelal. Songs like,
Sari Duniya Ka Bojh ham uthate hai, Mujhe Peene Ka Shauk Nahin, Jawani Ki Rail Kahin Choot Na Jaye,
Lambuji Lambuji Bolo Tinguji, Mubarak Ho Tumko Haj Ka Mahina , Accident Ho Gaya rabba rabba,
Hum Ka Ishq Hua Yaaro, still bring back the feel of the 80s when they play on old radio channels. (Coolie 1983 Bollywood evergreen classic)

Now comes the most important and real story behind the film. During a fight scene, Puneet Issar had to throw a fake punch towards Amitabh Bachchan. Amitabh was supposed to move back at the same time. But the timing went wrong and the punch actually hit him hard in the stomach. He fell down, and at first everyone thought it was a small injury. Soon the pain became unbearable and he was rushed to the hospital. Doctors found out that his intestine had burst. His condition was critical. The whole country was praying. People used to gather and wait anxiously outside the hospital day and night. The Bachchan family was in shock. Even the doctors had little hope. Fans qued to donate their blood to Amitabh Bachchan.

Amitabh Bachchan was known to be friendly and simple on the set. He often sat and talked with real coolies, had tea with them and learned about their work. Many real coolies appeared in the film as junior artists. Most of the station's sets were built on real railway platforms to keep the film authentic. Manmohan Desai always told the actors to work like normal people, not like stars.
