Bollywood super-star legend acting-dancing 'Monarch '-- Mithun Chakraborty will receive this year's Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India's highest official film honour given by the Government.

Our Hon’ble  Prime Minister  Narendra Modi-jee complimented the 74-year-old versatile charismatic actor said in his social media on X ( Twitter) message, “Delighted that Shri Mithun Chakraborty Ji has been conferred the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, recognizing his unparalleled contributions to Indian cinema. He is a cultural icon, admired across generations for his versatile performances.”

The otherwise fabulous versatile actor and fantastic dancer Mithun-da whom I know for past over 36 years seemed to be emotionally overwhelmed. The altruistic nature 'bade-dilwale'  ‘Disco Dancer’ lead actor Mithun-da reacted,”   I don’t know how to express this. I can’t cry, I can’t smile either. I am dedicating this award to my family and all my fans across the world,' Chakraborty said

Union Minister for I & B. Hon’ble Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw-jee had announced the news on X (formerly Twitter). He wrote, "Mithun Da's remarkable cinematic journey inspires generations. Honored to announce that the Dadasaheb Phalke Selection Jury has decided to award legendary actor, Mithun Chakraborty Ji for his iconic contribution to Indian Cinema."

Mithun Chakraborty, who will turn 75 next year,  will receive the Phalke Award on Tuesday, October 8 during the National Film Awards ceremony, the I & B Minister said. As per protocol, the Award would be handed over to him on stage  by the President of India

The veteran charismatic actor Mithun-da, a former Trinamool Rajya Sabha member who has now joined the BJP in 2021, was awarded the prestigious Padma Bhushan this year (2024) in January and now in October he will be receiving the Phalke Award. .  

Interestingly, Mithun Chakraborty, ( actual name Gouranga Chakraborty ) born in Kolkata, made his acting debut in the 1976 film Mrigayaa and won the National Film Award from the President for Best Actor for his debut movie itself!  Over the years, Mithun received Two More National Film Awards for his roles in Tahader Katha (1992) and Swami Vivekananda (1998). Recently, he appeared in The Kashmir Files, directed by Vivek Agnihotri. 

A hard-working, dedicated actor, Mithun-da is the all-time record-holder in Limca Book of National Records for 19 movies !!---- as lead actor in the same year 1989—which remains still unbroken in Bollywood!

Affectionately known as "Mithun da", the actor straddled art-house cinema and commercial films with ease, achieving box office success along with critical acclaim. Mithun-da gained legions of fans not just in India but also in Russia and China with his blockbuster hit movies like Disco Dancer, its the title-song and also the iconic song ‘Jimmy Jimmy Aaja Aaja’, Not only has he cemented his status as the Original Dancing Star-Actor but also inspired four generations of Bollywood newcomer heroes. In recent years, he has widened his fan-base into multi-millions as a Grand Master Judge on popular TV dance reality show competitions. Mithun-da's success-mantra has always been "always be a sincere, good human being, show care and respect for others. Never let starry success go to your head and don't let failure affect your heart," says Mithun-da who is fond of wearing a beret-cap worn by American-Cuban-Marxist rebel-revolutionary Che Guevara !.

In the recent past, it was a sentimental re-connect for me to catch up and chat with unassuming Superstar Mithun Chakraborty whom I know well, since OVER past three decades!  Kya Baat !! This exclusive meeting happened at the promotional event of his talented star-hero son Namashi's debut Hindi movie Bad Boy. While "Grandmaster" Mithun-da is globally popular as  Disco King ( his mega-hit movie "Disco Dancer") and  Rock-Star agile dancer, he is equally brilliant as a super-actor !! Three-time National Film Awards Winner and also  Filmfare Awards winner, versatile Mithun-da has re-invented himself time and again!
