Dharmendra’s departure from this world—accepting the will of the Divine—left millions heartbroken. The superstar who redefined the image of a hero on screen, and who filled countless hearts with warmth, simplicity, and genuine human affection is no longer with us. But at the foundation of his glowing career stands another pillar—Arjun Hingorani.

A Young Man from Punjab

In 1959, a young man named Dharam Singh Deol arrived in Mumbai from a small village in Punjab. His pockets were nearly empty, but his eyes carried dreams too big to measure. Though he had signed Bimal Roy’s Bandini, its shooting was yet to begin. It was during those struggling days that he met a new director—Arjun Hingorani—who looked at him once and said: “You will be a hero.”

Dharmendra thought he might receive a signing amount of ₹5,000. But he was handed only ₹51. Anyone else might have felt disappointed, but not Dharmendra. He took those 51 rupees and treated his friends at a dhaba, proudly announcing: “We’re celebrating today—I’ve been signed as a hero!”

A Beginning with ‘Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere’

In 1960, Dharmendra made his film debut with Arjun Hingorani’s Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere. Though the film didn’t perform well at the box office, Dharmendra’s innocence and the song “Raat Ki Tanhaaiyon Mein Na Bulaana…” resonated deeply with audiences.

This marked the beginning of a bond that would reshape Dharmendra’s destiny. A decade later, they reunited for the 1970 film Kab? Kyun? Aur Kahaan?, which became a superhit and revived their partnership. Their friendship was so deep that Dharmendra would affectionately tease Hingorani as “kaanon ka kaccha,” and Hingorani would simply laugh it off.

Dharmendra–Hingorani: A streak of successful films

Together, the duo delivered several hits— Kaahani Kismat Ki, Khel Khilari Ka, Kaatilon Ke Kaatil, and later Kaun Kare Qurbani. Their relationship extended far beyond films. When Dharmendra launched the Sunny Super Sound studio, Arjun Hingorani became its very first client. A gesture that reflected their decades-long bond of decades.

Arjun Hingorani didn’t just give Dharmendra a break— He launched Sadhana in Abana, welcomed his niece Anita Raj into the film family, brought his son Amit Hingorani into films, and his daughter Karishma became a costume designer. In 2005, he also authored an inspiring book, How to Be Happy and Realize Your Dreams.

A Friend’s Death That Broke His Heart

In the final years of his life, Arjun Hingorani settled in Vrindavan, immersed completely in Krishna devotion. When he passed away, Dharmendra shared an emotional tribute on social media: “When I was completely alone in Mumbai… a stranger… the man who placed a hand on my shoulder is gone today.
It hurts deeply…”

In a single moment, every memory came rushing back—those early days of struggle, the first encouragement, the first hand of support, and the first belief someone showed in him.

From 51 Rupees to 65 Years of Friendship

What began with 51 rupees grew into a 65-year bond of unbreakable friendship.
Dharmendra and Arjun Hingorani may no longer be with us, but the struggling young man Hingorani once believed in went on to become one of India’s most beloved superstars. Their friendship, trust, and humanity will forever remain a golden chapter in the history of Indian cinema.
