Dia Mirza Speaks on Clean Air, Pollution Concerns

For Dia, caring about the environment did not happen suddenly. It grew slowly with time. It came from learning, understanding, and then taking action. Air pollution has always been one of her main concerns. She says that clean air has been at the heart of her environmental work.

Almost eight years ago, when she was made a UNEP ambassador, she attended a conference in Bangkok for a campaign called Breathe Life. That was when she truly started understanding air pollution numbers and data, which many people are talking about only now.

Dia says that earlier, air quality was discussed only during the winter months. Even then, most people thought it was only a Delhi problem.

Today, the data clearly shows that air pollution is not limited to one city or one state. It affects the whole country. Even the,n many states have not treated it with the seriousness it needs.

She says that for almost ten years, the same message has been repeated. The right to live starts with the right to breathe, and breathing starts with clean air.

She explained that air pollution is dangerous because we often cannot see it. People notice it more in winter when the air seems thick. But the truth is that air quality stays poor for long periods throughout the year. With 21 of the world’s most polluted cities in India, she feels it should be treated as a national health emergency.

Dia points out that air pollution affects everyone. Pregnant women, unborn babies, children who are still growing, adults, and older people. No one is safe. Long exposure can cause brain fog, slow growth in children, health problems in women in their 40s or during menopause, and many breathing illnesses. In simple words, polluted air harms all of us. AQI levels above 100 are harmful, and anything above 300 is dangerous even for a short time. This should never be seen as normal.

She also talked about checking air quality data on different platforms like IQAir and scientific centres such as ICRISAT in Hyderabad, where government-approved monitors are used.

What worries her is that different platforms often show very different numbers. Independent apps usually show AQI levels much higher than government readings.

When official numbers look lower, people feel safe when they should not. Blaming apps or questioning machines does not solve the problem. Ignoring the issue only delays action. Dia believes the truth must be accepted and correct information must be shared. Air pollution should be treated as what it really is, a public health emergency.

Dia Mirza’s work with the United Nations has been serious and long-term, not just for show.

Over the years, she has worked as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Environment Programme, an Advocate for the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, and an Ambassador for the Wildlife Trust of India.

Her work includes global meetings, environmental campaigns, and work at the ground level. At a time when many issues change quickly, Dia’s commitment has remained steady and strong.
