In the past decade, filmmaking has undergone significant changes. Instead of working hard on original subjects to create new films, (Deewaar 1975 full movie online) filmmakers are investing all their energy in making remakes or sequels of classic films. Many sequels have already been produced. Very soon, a remake of the 1975 film Deewaar, (Amitabh Bachchan Deewaar famous dialogues) which starred Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor, is also going to be made. This means Deewaar 2 will soon (Shashi Kapoor dialogue Deewaar scene) be in front of audiences. According to reports, Shah Rukh Khan and Ranveer Singh are being considered for Deewaar 2. However, Rajiv Rai of Trimurti Films, which is producing the film, has not yet revealed all the details.

Amitabh Bachchan’s Classic Deewaar Still Timeless

The original Deewaar, produced by Gulshan Rai and directed by Yash Chopra, starred Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor along with Neetu Singh, Nirupa Roy, Parveen Babi, Iftekhar, Madan Puri, Satyen Kappu, (Deewaar movie cast and crew) and Manmohan Krishna. The music was composed by R.D. Burman, with cinematography by K.G. Koravankar and editing by T.R. Mangeshkar–Pran Mehra. (Deewaar songs list R.D. Burman)

Gulshan Rai, the producer of Deewaar, was one of the most renowned distributors, producers, and financiers of his time. He used to say, “Tell me the story in two minutes. If I like it in two minutes, I will consider making a film on it.” It is said that one day the writer duo Salim–Javed visited Gulshan Rai’s office and told him they had a story which was “Ganga Jamuna meets Mother India.” Gulshan Rai liked the pitch and agreed to make the film. The film was titled Deewaar. However, Deewaar was neither a copy of Ganga Jamuna nor of Mother India. It was simply Salim–Javed’s unique style of convincing Rai with a two-minute pitch. Deewaar turned out to be a completely original film, with many of its scenes later copied by other filmmakers.

If you observe closely, in Deewaar, the elder son, despite his father’s absence, is determined to keep his mother happy and protect her honor at all costs. Doesn’t the same emotion appear in Allu Arjun’s blockbuster Pushpa 2?

After Rai approved the two-minute story, Salim–Javed narrated the full script. In short, Deewaar revolves around two poor brothers struggling to survive with their mother in the slums of Mumbai. At one point, despite their father’s honesty, some people forcibly tattoo the words “Mera baap chor hai” (My father is a thief) on the elder son Vijay’s arm. After this humiliation, Vijay (Amitabh Bachchan) starts working as a shoeshine boy, later becomes a dockyard laborer, and eventually gives up his own education to support his younger brother Ravi (Shashi Kapoor), enabling him to become a police inspector. Meanwhile, Vijay himself turns toward (Yash Chopra Deewaar film details) crime and becomes a dreaded underworld figure. The two brothers then find themselves on opposite sides of the law. Their mother, Sumitra (Nirupa Roy), stays with the younger son, Ravi. In the climax, Vijay is killed by Ravi, dying on the steps of a temple in his mother’s arms. Ravi is filled with remorse. The title Deewaar symbolizes the wall that circumstances and fate erect between two brothers during a time of social and political upheaval. Deewaar is one of only three Hindi films included in the book 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die. The film established Amitabh Bachchan’s image as the “angry young man.” Its impact extended not only to Indian cinema but also to Hong Kong and British films.

As for casting, it is said that Amitabh Bachchan, Shashi Kapoor, and Nirupa Roy were not the first choices. Rajesh Khanna was considered for Vijay’s role, while Naveen Nischol and Shatrughan Sinha were considered for Ravi’s. But Salim–Javed insisted on Amitabh Bachchan. Once he was finalized, Shashi Kapoor was cast as Ravi. For the mother’s role, names such as Waheeda Rehman and Vyjayanthimala were considered. In fact, Yash Chopra even approached Vyjayanthimala, but she refused to play a mother at that stage in her career. Finally, the role went to Nirupa Roy. Yash Chopra completed the film in just 70 days of continuous shooting. Most scenes were filmed at night, since Bachchan was shooting Sholay with Ramesh Sippy during the day.

Vijay Verma’s iconic look—khaki trousers, blue denim shirt tied at the waist, and a rope slung over his shoulder—remains memorable even today. Amitabh once revealed that this look was actually the result of a tailor’s mistake. The shirt was too long, so they tied a knot to adjust it, and the rope was added to balance the look.

Gulshan Rai’s son, Rajiv Rai, who directed hits like Yudh, Gupt, Tridev, Vishwatma, and Mohra, settled abroad in 2004 due to certain reasons. After living overseas for 20 years, he has now returned to Mumbai with plans to make six or seven films. His first suspense thriller Zohra was released in theaters on August 8. His second film Zohra Zoravar has also been completed. As a tribute to his father and the late director Yash Chopra, Rajiv Rai is now working on a remake of the 1975 classic Deewaar, titled Deewaar 2.

It is being said that Rai has already written the story of Deewaar 2, which may be directed by Apoorva Lakhia. Along with Rai’s company, Trimurti Films, Salim–Javed and Reliance Entertainment might also join the project. Speculation is rife that Shah Rukh Khan and Ranveer Singh could star in the film, though nothing is confirmed yet.

When asked about Deewaar 2, Rajiv Rai initially said, “We have already made Deewaar 2.” But shortly afterward, he corrected himself, saying, “That was wrong. I am going to make Deewaar 2. I have written the story. I have taken the old film’s title and its theme of two brothers. Everything else is new. I can’t reveal more at this stage, but before shooting begins, I will definitely talk about it.”
