Did you research or study the case before starting the shoot?

I knew a little about it, but only on a surface level. I wasn’t aware of the case’s intricacies or its deeper realities. We had read about it in school or in newspapers, but the research done for this film was quite detailed. The case is just an inspiration — there’s also some dramatization in the film. Did the story remind you of any real-life incident or experience where you saw relationships breaking apart?

Yes, there are people close to me, or those I know, who have gone through similar difficult times. Divorce is never easy. Sometimes it drags on for 10–15 years. Your character Abbas Khan has many layers. How did you prepare yourself to play him?

Whenever I play a character, I try to understand him first. Sometimes, at the beginning, it’s hard to grasp the character, but as you read the script and live the scenes, the truth starts revealing itself. A person like Abbas Khan may seem grey, but every individual is a hero in their own story. No one sees themselves as wrong. Every conflict is between two right points of view — not between right and wrong.

It’s being said that Haq is not a debate on religion, but a call for justice — what’s your take on that?

Absolutely true. The film doesn’t target any community. The real case might have been related to a particular community, but the film’s message goes beyond that. It’s the story of a woman’s fight for dignity. Often in society, a man’s so-called righteousness or hypocritical religiosity ends up costing a woman dearly. That’s the harsh reality of our society — and the film depicts it in a very sensitive way.

You’ve worked with various production houses and never tied yourself to a single camp. Was that an easy choice?

It never felt difficult to me. I’ve always built my identity through my work. I give 500% to every film I do. That’s my currency and my goodwill. Do you think roles in films like Ghanchakkar or Ek Thi Daayan were experiments in your career, and would you like to take on such roles again?

Definitely! I look at every script with a fresh perspective. I love experimenting. Doing complex films might hurt you at the box office, but it gives you a new experience and artistic satisfaction.
