Hindi Journalism Day: Know about 'Udant Martand', the first Hindi newspaper

Every year on 30 May, Hindi Journalism Day is celebrated in India. The celebration of this day started from the day when the first Hindi newspaper 'Udant Martand' was published on 30 May 1826.

It was started to bring awareness during the era of slavery

Talking about the country's interests was a challenging task during the era of slavery. People were made aware of the condition of the country through speeches, but there was a need for a medium that could make people aware of their rights without noise. 'Udant Martand' was born from this idea.

The first Hindi Newspaper was started in Calcutta

On 30 May 1826, the first Hindi newspaper named 'Udant Martand' was published. It was published on Tuesday. 'Udant Martand' means 'Samachaar Surya'. It was a weekly newspaper whose editor and publisher was Pandit Jugal Kishore Shukla. At that time, newspapers in English, Bengali, and Urdu languages ​​were printed in Calcutta, but there was no Hindi-language newspaper, so Jugal Kishore Shukla started this newspaper. Let us tell you that for the first time 500 copies of the weekly newspaper 'Udant Martand' were printed.

'Udant Martand' was closed on 4 December 1826

This newspaper, which started with enthusiasm, unfortunately, closed in just seven months due to a lack of Hindi readers and a shortage of money. Its publication was stopped on 4 December 1826.

'Udant Martand' may have closed, but it laid the foundation of Hindi journalism. Inspired by the success of 'Udant Martand', many other Hindi newspapers started getting published.
