Acclaimed genius film-maker Mani Ratnam had originally planned to shoot his landmark musical thriller movie ‘Roja’(1992) with undercurrent of terrorism-kidnapping in Kashmir locations. But extreme real-life terrorism attacks during that period forced him to shoot ‘Roja’ songs and scenes in other hill stations with similar scenes, landscapes, mountains. Alternate shooting locations included Coonoor, Ooty, and of course Kulu-Manali in northern region Himachal Pradesh!
The film's cinematographer Santosh Sivan said that a lot of beautiful Kashmiri locations were written in at the script-screenplay level; even in the scenes and songs the audience only sees the snow when Roja sees it for the first time. The entire film Roja starring Madhoo and Arvind Swamy, was completed in less than two months. After the release, Madhoo had said that "although the movie ‘Roja’ has wonderful lovely locations. But had it been shot on actual Kashmir and Pahalgam locations the movie would have possibly had much more natural grandeur and scenic snow and landscape beauty" ! .
