Kajol Reveals Why She Set Boundaries After Watching Mom Tanuja Work 20-Hour Days

Kajol recently revealed how her mother, Tanuja, used to work very long hours as an actress, sometimes up to 20 hours a day. Kajol remembered that her mother would leave for shooting early in the morning and return late at night only after the shoot was over, often not getting a chance to spend much time with the family. This experience had a deep impact on Kajol as a child. She said that she used to tell her mother, "I will never work like you," because she had seen how difficult and unpredictable her mother's working life was. Tanuja had to balance her acting career and the duties of being a mother, which was very difficult, especially when she did not want to be away from her children for such long periods of time.

Kajol said that seeing her mother work such long hours made her want to live a different kind of life herself. So in her teenage days, she aspired to have a regular job with fixed working hours and a steady salary, rather than the erratic and demanding schedule of a film actor. Seeing her mother's dedication to work and childcare, Kajol learned about responsibility and independence from a young age, starting at just 13 years old.

Kajol Talks Career Boundaries & Work-Life Balance

When Kajol began her career in Bollywood, she decided to set some clear boundaries for herself. She chose to work on one film at a time, almost from the start, and avoided working long or multiple shifts. Kajol said she never worked 20 or 30 hours in a row and always made sure to maintain a balance between her work and personal life. She credits her mother for supporting her in making these choices and supporting her when she wanted to work fewer hours.

Kajol's views have become important in the current discussion about working hours in the film industry. Recently, there has been a debate about many actors (especially women), such as Deepika Padukone, demanding shorter shifts to maintain a healthy work-life balance. Kajol supported this idea, saying that she has always preferred eight-hour shifts, and when she had to take early leave for her personal reasons, the filmmakers and her family would understandably handle everything smoothly. She recalled that after the birth of her daughter Nysa, she discussed her working hours with the producers, and most of them supported her.

Kajol also revealed that when she faced personal challenges, her husband Ajay Devgn helped her manage work and family. For example, when her father was in the hospital and her daughter was very young, Ajay balanced his work as a producer so that Kajol could go home early and take care of her family.

Kajol and other determined actresses like her are examples of how the film industry is slowly changing, with actors demanding fair and reasonable working hours. She believes that actors, especially mothers, should not have to choose between their careers and their families. Their experience shows that with mutual support and clear boundaries, it is possible to succeed in films without sacrificing a personal life.

Kajol's respect and sentimentality for her mother's hard work is obvious, but she also makes it clear that every generation can learn and make changes to improve their lives.
