Kajol's mission: A confluence of family, environment and truth

Kajol is one of those Bollywood superstars who is used to speaking her mind freely, boldly, and candidly. No one has the power to interrupt or stop her. The uproar that has been created in the internet world these days because Ajay Devgan interrupted Kajol while she was talking to the press at an event was, frankly, unnecessary. People should not forget that Kajol is Kajol, after all. She says what she wants to say, whether anyone likes it or not. In such a situation, if her own family members come to intervene, they do not interrupt Kajol but come to handle her so that no one can take advantage of Kajol's boldness and outspokenness. Kajol is bold and beautiful like her mother, famous actress Tanuja. When Kajol speaks, she does it clean bolt.

Kajol Leads by Example in Cleanliness Campaigns

The word 'clean' reminds me that Kajol, beyond her presence on the big screen, has been a passionate supporter of keeping the environment clean for many years. For Kajol, talking about the environment is not just a celebrity trend or a way to get attention. It is something she truly believes in. Kajol never hesitates to roll up her sleeves and join the cleanliness drive herself. Sometimes, she literally jumps into the fray. She often says, "It is our responsibility to keep our environment clean."

That's true. When even animals clean their place before using it, when even swans,  ducks remove garbage from the pond and get into the water, why not humans?

Kajol's initiative as an environment supporter starts with small steps at home. Like many of us, Kajol too realised that change starts in our own backyards. Or in her case, her own living room. But what makes Kajol unique is how her kids, Nysa and Yug, have become her biggest teachers and critics. Kajol once laughingly shared that her kids are quick to remind her, “Mom, what you teach everyone, you should follow it yourself.” It’s a classic case of kids keeping their parents honest. She admits that sometimes giving advice is easier than following it yourself.

Kajol’s advocacy for cleanliness is not just limited to telling people not to litter around, picking up litter lying around or planting green trees. She has been deeply involved in campaigns over the years that focus on hygiene, handwashing and cleanliness, whether at home or outside. She has seriously worked with the NDTV-Dettol Banega Swasth India campaign to spread the message that clean habits are essential for a healthy life. She has also been the global ambassador for the “Help a Child Reach 5” campaign, which teaches children the importance of washing their hands to prevent diseases. Kajol believes that if you want kids to listen to you, you need to show them, not just tell them. She has also used UV light (which makes invisible things visible) to show her kids how germs can hide on their hands, and how scary it is.

Their kids, Nysa and Yug, have been Kajol and Ajay’s partners in this mission, right from the start. They remind them to turn off lights when not needed, not to waste water, and always wash their hands before eating. Laughing at how her son and daughter warn her if she accidentally leaves the tap open or forgets to turn off the lights, Kajol says, “These moments keep us grounded.”

Kajol added, “As far as kids are concerned, it’s important to do things yourself first. I have learnt from my kids that you should do what you tell others to do. They follow it diligently and so do I."

Sometimes, Kajol jokingly says, her kids are stricter than any environment police. If something goes wrong, the kids will not hesitate to post it on social media.

Kajol's husband, top actor Ajay Devgn, supports her, although he says he is too busy to be as creatively involved in these campaigns. Still, the whole family tries to follow the rules set by Kajol. Even if that means the kids playfully roll their eyes or make naughty complaints when Kajol gets too excited about composting or recycling. Kajol believes that star power can help spread important messages in every direction. But she is careful not to sound preachy. She tries to make it exciting by using her family's struggles and successes as examples.

One of the most interesting things about Kajol's approach is her belief that women play a key role in environmental management. Often women, especially mothers, have the power to change a family's habits. Whether it is sorting waste, recycling or making sure that food is not wasted, she talks about how food wastage not only harms the environment by creating methane gas but also wastes all the resources that went into making that food. For her, every small step starting from home can bring about big changes in society.

Kajol is also grateful for the support of our government, especially for programs like Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. She says that while NGOs and celebrities can spread awareness, for real change, everyone including the government needs to participate. She had also discussed the importance of cleanliness with Prime Minister Modi Ji many years ago and underlined the habit of frequent handwashing, especially in schools. She believes that when the government, celebrities and common people work together, real progress can be made.

Kajol's true magic is her honesty. She does not pretend to be perfect. She shares her mistakes and her lessons. She tells stories about her family's petty fights over recycling bins, or how her daughter once made a chart to find out who in the house was wasting the most water. She finds the humor in these everyday struggles, and that makes her message even stronger.

Kajol's cleanliness awareness campaign has reached beyond India. As an ambassador for the handwashing campaign, she has spoken at the United Nations, highlighting how simple habits can save lives and the environment.

She admits that sometimes giving advice is easier than following it, but their gentle nagging helps her stay on the right track.
