On December 10th (Tuesday), the Kapoor family, descendants of the legendary actor, producer, and director Raj Kapoor, had the privilege of meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During this interaction, the family members asked the Prime Minister several questions, to which he responded with great enthusiasm.
Ranbir Kapoor Shares His Experience
Ranbir Kapoor shared his experience of preparing for the meeting with PM Modi. He mentioned that when the family WhatsApp group was discussing how to address the Prime Minister, everyone was a bit uncertain—whether to call him "Prime Minister Ji" or "Modi Ji." Ranbir revealed that Reema Bua (Raj Kapoor’s daughter) had been calling him daily, asking if she could ask this question or that. In response, PM Modi reassured him saying, “I am also a part of your family. You can ask me anything you want.”
Reema Kapoor’s Humorous Moment with PM Modi
Reema Kapoor, Raj Kapoor’s daughter, took her turn to speak. She began addressing the Prime Minister with great respect, saying, "Adarniya Prime Minister Ji Narendra Modi Ji..." At this point, in a playful, filmi-style manner, PM Modi interrupted her with a “Cut!” This lighthearted moment made everyone laugh.
Reema Kapoor Reminisces
During their meeting, Reema Kapoor shared a fond memory, telling PM Modi that even today, Ranbir gets free taxi rides in the name of Raj Kapoor. She recalled how Raj Kapoor was a cultural ambassador on a small scale. "But now, thanks to you, our family has made it onto the global map. Every member of our family takes immense pride in you," Reema added. She even sang a couple of lines from one of Raj Kapoor’s famous songs, “Hum Na Rahenge, Tum Na Rahoge, Phir Bhi Rahengi Nishaniyan,” evoking nostalgia.
Alia Bhatt’s Thoughtful Question
Alia Bhatt, who was present in a stunning saree, also took the opportunity to ask PM Modi a lighthearted question. She told him, "When you visited Africa, there was a song from my film that someone was humming, and it made us all very happy. I’ve noticed that although many people don’t understand Hindi, they still love listening to it. Even today, Raj Kapoor’s songs are listened to and connect with people." Alia then cheekily asked, "Do you get time to listen to music, Prime Minister Ji?"
PM Modi replied with a smile, “Yes, I do get time to listen to music. I really enjoy it. Whenever I get the chance, I make sure to listen.”
Saif Ali Khan’s Gratitude
Saif Ali Khan also expressed his gratitude towards PM Modi, saying, “You’ve opened doors for us. You’re the first Prime Minister I’ve met, and I’m truly grateful. I congratulate you." In response, PM Modi shared that he had met Saif's father, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, and jokingly said, "I thought I would meet three generations today, but you didn’t bring the third generation with you.”
PM Modi Recalls a Moment with Raj Kapoor’s Films
PM Modi fondly recalled how Raj Kapoor’s films had a lasting impact, sharing a story involving former Prime Ministers Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Lal Krishna Advani. He said, “When they lost the election, they went to Paharganj in Delhi and watched the movie ‘Phir Subah Hogi.’ And look, the morning did come.” PM Modi then shared another anecdote from his time in China, where Raj Kapoor’s song was playing. He asked his friends to record it on their phones and send it to Rishi Kapoor, who was overjoyed by it.
Armaan Jain’s Heartfelt Tribute
Armaan Jain, Reema Kapoor’s son, paid a heartfelt tribute to PM Modi, calling him his “real-life hero.” He said, “I can say with certainty that wherever Nana (Raj Kapoor) is today, he must be very happy to know that we are all remembering him on his 100th birth anniversary. For me, my hero in reel life is Nana, but in real life, my hero is Narendra Modi Ji, because of the way he has brought our country to the world stage.” Armaan also shared that he is producing a film inspired by Raj Kapoor, with the entire Kapoor family involved.
Yoga and Raj Kapoor’s Legacy
During the meeting, PM Modi spoke about the impact of yoga, and Riddhima (daughter of Raj Kapoor) shared how yoga had become an integral part of her life, as well as her mother Neetu Kapoor’s and Kareena Kapoor’s routines.
PM Modi also expressed his admiration for Raj Kapoor’s golden era and suggested that a documentary be made to celebrate his legacy. He suggested, “Raj Kapoor’s international ‘soft power’ was immense. We should make a documentary about his legacy and showcase it to the world, especially in Central Asia, which has a strong connection with Raj Kapoor.”
On December 14, the Kapoor family will celebrate Raj Kapoor’s 100th birth anniversary. PM Modi concluded the meeting with a thought-provoking idea, saying that the upcoming century of Raj Kapoor's journey should be celebrated in a way that resonates globally, ensuring his legacy continues to inspire generations.
