Karisma Kapoor Didn’t Receive Ex-Husband’s Ashes: Businessman and polo player Sunjay Kapur, ex-husband of actress Karisma Kapoor, passed away on 16 June 2025 while playing polo in London. Due to his U.S. citizenship, it took time to bring his mortal remains to India. His last rites were performed on 19 June at Lodhi Road crematorium in Delhi at 5 PM. A prayer meet is scheduled for 22 June at 4:30 PM at a prominent hotel in Delhi.

But before the funeral even took place, social media had already erupted with speculative and distasteful posts about Karisma Kapoor—her silence, her past, her choices.

The irony? Most of those writing today weren’t even aware of the actual timeline of events, while veteran film journalists like us chose silence—out of dignity and respect.

From Engagement with Abhishek Bachchan to Marriage with Sunjay Kapur

Karisma’s life was once poised to be tied with Bollywood royalty. She was engaged to Abhishek Bachchan, and the engagement was announced grandly at JW Marriott, Mumbai, with Jaya Bachchan calling her “my future daughter-in-law.” Their bonding had grown during Sweta Bachchan’s wedding, as Sweta was marrying into Karisma's extended family (Reema Kapoor’s in-laws).

However, this alliance was broken—allegedly due to political interference and family dynamics. Amar Singh, a close confidant of the Bachchans, was reportedly unhappy with the match, and though no official reason was ever made public, the engagement was called off.

Shortly after, Karisma married Delhi-based businessman Sunjay Kapur in a quiet ceremony at the Krishna Raj bungalow in Mumbai. Many saw this as an act of emotional rebellion. Their marriage later bore two children—Samaira and Kiaan—and for a while, the couple seemed to leave the past behind.

From Love to Legal Battles

But cracks in their relationship surfaced soon. Allegations of physical abuse, dowry demands, and extramarital affairs surfaced during their divorce proceedings. The media covered every sordid detail. In 2014, they filed for divorce, retracted it briefly in 2015, but officially separated in 2016, with mutual custody and alimony agreements in place.

Even amid chaos, Karisma chose silence. She never remarried. Her father, Randhir Kapoor, had advised her to move on, but she focused solely on her children. As she once said, “My children need me, not a new relationship.”

Today, Samaira is 20 and Kiaan is 14. Their father is now gone—permanently and silently, just as their parents' relationship once dissolved.

What stings more is the lack of visible presence or acknowledgment from Bollywood at Sunjay Kapur’s funeral. As his body was cremated, no big names arrived. And yet, social media continues to scrutinise Karisma’s silence, ignoring the reality of personal grief and distance.
