Actor and filmmaker Anshuman Jha's directorial debut film "Lord Curzon Ki Haveli" has got an 'A' certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), but along with this three necessary changes have also been sought.
The censor screening of the film was done on 3 January 2025 and after a long process of more than four months, the film has been approved. But the makers are not happy with this certificate.
Anshuman Jha on CBFC's Language & Censorship Objections
Director Anshuman Jha told that the CBFC asked to remove or mute an abuse spoken by a female character because it had a woman-related word attached to it, while the film has already been given an 'A' certificate Apart from this, the board also had objections to the language of the film as it is 50% in Hindi and 50% in English — something the director is also unhappy with.
Lord Curzon Ki Haveli is a black comedy thriller that has been well received on the international film festival circuit last year.
Anshuman Jha also took home the "Best Director" prize at the UK Asian Film Festival 2024; the film was the only Indian entry picked for Razor Reel Flanders 2024, Europe's biggest genre film festival.
International Emmy nominated Arjun Mathur heads the cast, with major parts going to Rasika Duggal, Paresh Pahuja, and Tanmay Dhanania. The tale centres on the Asian UK's fight for identity and immigration.
Strangely enough, the movie is the first widely released Indian film to be filmed entirely on a single 35mm lens.
According to French cinematographer Jean Marc Selva, This experiment is inspired by director Jha's passion for Hitchcock. The film has been receiving a lot of praise internationally for its cinematography and it's unique narrative.
The film is written by award-winning writer Bikash Mishra and produced by Golden Rays Films, Adhya Films UK and First Ray Films. The film has also won several international awards after its world premiere in Australia - including the "Star of Asia" award for Rasika Duggal (CSAFF Chicago) and "Best Actor" for Arjun Mathur (UKAFF London).
On receiving the censor certificate, Anshuman Jha said, "It's a relief that we have finally got the certification. But the journey was not easy. We always wanted to make the film we had envisioned. To get an A certificate after so long and then have to cut or mute scenes - it's disappointing. Some films even get a 'UA' and show more explicit content than that. I am ready to follow the rules, but the process needs to be equal and transparent." Now that the film has been approved in India, the expectations of the audience for “Lord Curzon Ki Haveli” have increased even more.
