"Love Just Happens!" Aamir Khan Opens Up About New Romance With Gauri Spratt and Emotions Surrounding 'Sitaare Zameen Par'

(There’s a storm brewing in the depths of the ocean, the waves are rising...) — this poetic line from diplomat-writer Vagish Saraswat’s Facebook wall instantly reminded me of Aamir Khan, who, in the midst of promoting his upcoming film Sitaare Zameen Par, seems to be navigating similarly turbulent emotions. Usually reserved during press interactions, Aamir has opened up in recent promotional interviews, sharing thoughts he had long kept buried under a blanket of “No personal life… Privacy, please.” Here, we unravel some of the layers of Aamir’s inner world and the honesty that defines him.

The Truth About Gauri Spratt and Love:

During a recent airport appearance in Mumbai as he departed for a promotional event for Sitaare Zameen Par, Aamir was spotted with his new girlfriend Gauri Spratt. The couple stepped out of the car together, posed for photos, and interacted warmly with fans. Aamir openly admitted, “Love happened… You don’t fall in love intentionally, it just happens.” He added, “Gauri and I met, became friends, and then fell in love.”

Aamir also reflected, “Before I met Kiran Rao, I had started feeling old. Therapy taught me the importance of self-love. Love brings a longing to reconnect with life—it just happens. It’s happened!”

On His Son Junaid:

In one of his interviews, Aamir shared that he had a deep emotional connection to his 2007 film Taare Zameen Par because his son Junaid Khan (now an actor) struggled with dyslexia. The same condition that afflicted the film’s protagonist, Ishaan (played by Darsheel Safary), had affected Junaid in real life—though neither Aamir nor his then-wife Reena Dutta could understand it at the time.

Aamir said, “My state of mind was just like the father, Nandkishore Awasthi, in the film. When I first heard the story, I finally understood Junaid’s struggles. That’s why I got so deeply involved with the film.” Aamir kept this fact hidden for 18 years, never telling anyone about Junaid’s condition—until Junaid himself spoke about it publicly. “So now it’s no longer a breach of privacy,” Aamir clarified.

On Reena Dutta and Kiran Rao:

Aamir, who rarely speaks publicly about his ex-wives, spoke candidly this time. He said that when he married Reena Dutta, both were quite young. “I had a stubborn nature and a big ego,” he admitted. “Reena took great care of me and paid attention to the smallest things, but if I got upset, I would just stop speaking for days. That’s why the relationship couldn’t last.”

Aamir revealed that his separation from Kiran Rao had similar roots. “This time we were mature as husband and wife, but my ego kept interfering in every decision. That’s why we decided to live separately. I later realized my mistakes and stubbornness.” He also mentioned that he continues to maintain good relationships with both Reena and Kiran.

Why His Relationship with Taare Zameen Par Writer Soured:

Taare Zameen Par, released in 2007, is thematically connected to the upcoming Sitaare Zameen Par. The original film was written by Amole Gupte. On this, Aamir commented, “The story touched my heart. I understood the pain of children with learning disabilities because of Junaid.”

He added, “When I first heard the story, I was eager to make it into a film. But there was uncertainty about who would direct it. When we couldn’t find the right person quickly, I took the responsibility myself. That’s all—there was no conflict.”

Aamir’s Voice in Sitaare Zameen Par:

While Taare Zameen Par was widely acclaimed and won awards across the globe, Sitaare Zameen Par follows in its footsteps with a fresh perspective. Aamir is not just acting in the film but is also deeply involved in its storytelling and production. The film is directed by Prasanna and carries a similar vision and purpose as its predecessor.

Interestingly, amid this intense promotional phase, a more expressive Aamir Khan has emerged—one who is willing to share personal truths. The man known for his discipline and perfectionism is revealing his emotional core, both on and off-screen. Whether it’s standing at the Mumbai airport beside his new love, Gauri Spratt, or casually saying, “Love happened by mistake”.
