PM Modi on 150 Years of ‘Vande Mataram’  A Timeless Anthem That Will Forever Inspire India

On Friday, November 7, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the year-long commemoration celebrating 150 years of the national song Vande Mataram at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi. On this occasion, he released a commemorative postage stamp and coin, and also launched the official Vande Mataram website.

The Prime Minister said that the celebration — from November 7, 2025, to November 7, 2026 — marks the formal beginning of a nationwide observance honoring 150 years of this timeless composition. He added that Vande Mataram inspired India’s freedom movement and continues to ignite the spirit of national pride and unity.

PM Modi’s Address

Beginning his address, PM Modi said, “Vande Mataram — these words are a mantra, a source of energy, a dream, a resolve. Vande Mataram is a form of worship, a spiritual connection with Mother India. These words take us back in history, fill our present with renewed confidence, and give us the courage to believe that no goal is beyond our reach.”

He further said, “During the colonial era, Vande Mataram became the declaration of our resolve — that the chains of slavery would be broken by the hands of Mother India, and her children would shape their own destiny. I bow in reverence to the countless sons and daughters of Mother India who dedicated their lives for Vande Mataram, and I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the people of India.”

Speaking about the collective singing of Vande Mataram at the event, the Prime Minister remarked, “The experience of this mass rendition of Vande Mataram is truly beyond words. So many voices — yet one rhythm, one melody, one emotion, one shared thrill, one shared flow. This harmony, this wave of energy, stirred every heart.”

PM Modi quoted Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, who once said that Bankim Chandra Chatterjee’s Anandamath is not merely a novel but a vision of a free India. The inclusion of Vande Mataram in Anandamath, every line, every word of Bankim Babu’s composition, carried deep meaning then — and continues to do so today. Though written during the time of oppression, its words were never imprisoned by the shadows of slavery; they remained eternally free. That is why Vande Mataram is relevant in every era, every age — it has achieved immortality.

When Bankim Babu first published Vande Mataram in the literary journal Bangadarshan in 1875, some thought it was just a song. But soon, Vande Mataram became the voice of India’s freedom struggle — the chant on every revolutionary’s lips, the expression of every Indian’s emotion.

PM Modi further said, “For those who see a nation as merely a geopolitical entity, the idea of viewing the nation as a mother may seem strange. But India is different — here, the nation is both the nurturer and the creator. And when her children are in danger, the mother also becomes the destroyer of evil. In 1937, important verses — the very soul — of Vande Mataram were separated. This division sowed the seeds of partition. It is important for today’s generation to know why such injustice was done to this nation-building mantra, because that same divisive mindset still poses challenges for our country.”

On Developed India

PM Modi also spoke about the vision of a developed India, saying, “India today is the world’s fifth-largest economy. We must make this century the century of India. The strength lies within us — within 1.4 billion Indians. All we need is faith in ourselves.”
