She would often describe herself as “barren” for not having children. In her early forties, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, but she wanted to live because her family depended on her.
Her father Vijay Tendulkar was battling Parkinson’s disease, her mother had been bedridden for years due to dementia, while her brother Raju (a cinematographer) and her sister Sushma both passed away due to alcoholism. Eventually, her parents also passed away.
Amidst these sorrows, Priya Tendulkar passed away in Mumbai on September 19, 2002. She was only 47 years old.
