The late-afternoon press conference in Mumbai for Puratawn, the much-anticipated cinematic emotional classic, unfolded with heartfelt conversations, a powerful presence, and an air of nostalgia.
For the first time ever, two powerhouse performers — Rituparna Sengupta and the legendary royal demeanor yet modest Sharmila Tagore — come together on-screen in Puratawn. A cinematic moment that blends timeless elegance with emotional depth, the movie was premiered in the MAMI 2024 film-festival . It won unanimous praise-applause and I was there in the star-studded audience for that premiere screening and I had interacted with the entire lead cast including Sharmila-jee and Rituparna.
Coincidentally releasing on the the Good Friday bank-holiday, Puratawn is a deeply emotional narrative that follows the lives of three individuals as they’re forced to confront the memories they’ve tucked away. It’s a gripping story of reckoning, remembrance, and redemption — one that connects two generations the past, present, future through shared emotions and untold past suspense mysteries truths.
The modern contemporary film 'Puratawn' features super-talented ( eternal 'sapnon-ki-rani' ) vibrant, courteous Sharmila Tagore, in all her timeless grace, and National Award Winning actress Rituparna Sengupta, balancing dual roles as lead actor and producer, Indraneil Sengupta, known for his intensity and screen presence, supporting actress Brishti Roy ( as care-taker house-help), National Award-winning filmmaker Suman Ghosh, who wrote and directed Puratawn,
Explains exuberant Rituparna, ”It was not an easy task to get dedicated, perfectionist iconic actress Sharmila Tagore-Ma'am to accept our special movie, because she is very choosy and discerning . In fact we are so fortunate, she has done a Bengali movie ( 'Puratawn') after a long hiatus of over 14 years, and put in a fabulous convincing performance. Puratawn is a realistic, relatable piece of my heart. Not just Bengali audiences, our engaging movie will universally connect to every 'ageing mother-daughter' and every modern career-oriented husband-wife in the audience . It has a global emotional connect both with country-wide Indians and NRIs ( diaspora) As an experimental versatile actress, it allowed me to explore vulnerability and emotional bonding in its rawest organic form. As a producer, it was about backing a story that speaks to every soul who while looking back continues to move forward. This impactful film isn’t just about the past — it’s about reconciling to reality with grace, the sensitive bonding of an aged mother with partial loss of memory with her caring daughter ” says National Award winning actress-producer Rituparna Sengupta,
Otherwise based in Miami-Florida in USA, (economics professor) acclaimed writer-director Suman Ghosh who is a National Award-winning Indian filmmaker says ”When I first imagined Puratawn, I saw not just characters, but fragments of real people — carrying unresolved emotions, silences louder than words, and memories that never truly fade. Directing this film felt like walking through a delicate emotional maze, where every glance, pause, and breath had something to say. It’s one of the most intimate emotional stories I’ve ever told, " shares Suman-da whose movie 'Puratawn' also has a melodious song sung by eminent Shreya Ghoshal
