Radhika Apte Speaks On Pregnancy Bias In Bollywood
In an emotional and eye-opening conversation during the 'Freedom to Feed' live session organized by Neha Dhupia recently, popular actress Radhika Apte opened up about the many emotional and physical challenges (Radhika Apte upcoming movies 2025) she faced after announcing her pregnancy and shed light on the prejudices against motherhood in the Indian entertainment industry known as Bollywood. Radhika revealed that during the initial stages of her pregnancy, when she was still fulfilling her professional responsibilities (Radhika Apte Netflix series list), she had to face a huge difference in the behavior of people regarding her pregnancy announcement at two different workplaces, one in India and the other abroad.
Radhika further opened up, "The Indian producer I was working (Radhika Apte international awards nominations) with was not happy at all with this news. He responded coldly to my happy news. He even insisted that I wear tight clothes despite my discomfort and swollen belly. I was in the first trimester of my pregnancy and was constantly craving food, eating a lot, be it rice or pasta, and going through the normal body changes like every pregnant woman. But instead of understanding this, I had to face the insensitivity of the filmmaker. When I was in pain and was feeling restless on the set, I was not even allowed to see the doctor. I was really disappointed by this behaviour."
Radhika Apte Recalls Supportive Hollywood Experience
On the contrary, the Hollywood experience was entirely different. Radhika spoke about her positive experience of an international project she was a part of at the same time. "The Hollywood film producer I was working with was happy to hear (Radhika Apte plays RAW agent Sacred Games) about my pregnancy and was very supportive. When I told him that I was eating more than usual and might look like a completely different person by the end of the shoot, he laughed and said, 'Don't worry, even if you are a different person (Radhika Apte biography and early life) by the end of this project, it's okay. After all, you are pregnant, it's bound to happen.' That assurance and warmth meant a lot to me."
Radhika further added, "I understand that there are professional commitments, and I too have always respected them. But a little empathy goes a long way in such a situation. I didn't expect or wanted any special treatment, just a little sympathy and basic humanity after sharing such a personal and happy news."
Radhika Apte Urges Film Industry To Support Mothers
Radhika's heartbreaking and honest experience not only highlights the emotional burden of working during pregnancy for women, but also calls for an immediate change in the film industry's attitude (Radhika Apte films in different languages) towards working mothers. As part of Neha Dhupia's "Freedom to Feed" initiative, which promotes open conversations on maternal rights and motherhood, the experiences of these working women (Radhika Apte brand endorsements) serve as a reminder to the film industry to create a safer and more inclusive environment for women.
With so many more actresses speaking out about their experiences, it's time for the Bollywood industry, or any industry, to move beyond outdated mindsets and welcome people working in it to embrace motherhood as a phase that should be supported, not ignored, soured and brushed aside with a cold, heartless attitude.
