There has been a great deal of curiosity surrounding one key character in the much-anticipated, much-discussed, and much-awaited film Ramayana — who would play the role of Urmila? Urmila is a significant character in the Ramayana saga, and until now, the film's production team had kept her casting under wraps. Many Bollywood actresses were eager to land this role, especially given that Ramayana, being made in two parts with a massive ₹400 crore budget, is touted as the most expensive cinematic rendition of the epic to date.

So now, we can finally reveal that filmmaker Nitesh Tiwari has found his Urmila. She has already shot several scenes with Lakshman, another key character in the story. After extensive searching and rounds of auditions, the role of Urmila has been bagged by Assamese actress Surbhi Das from Guwahati. According to the original epic, Urmila is the wife of Lakshman, the younger brother of Lord Ram.

As is already widely known, after a long and detailed research and selection process, Nitesh Tiwari cast Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram and South Indian star Sai Pallavi as Sita. Ravi Dubey is playing Lakshman, while South superstar Yash will be seen as Ravan. All key characters — Ram, Sita, Lakshman, Ravan — are portrayed by well-known faces from the Indian film industry. However, the identity of Urmila had remained a mystery — until now. Urmila, Sita’s biological sister and Lakshman’s devoted wife, is a character filled with grace and sacrifice. Even though the role is not very large, the film’s massive budget and growing buzz made it a highly desirable part, with many prominent actresses vying for it. In the end, the role went to Surbhi Das, who considers it a divine blessing.

Born on August 22, 1998, in Guwahati, Surbhi Das began her career in television serials. She is best known for the serial Neema Denzongpa (2021), and has also appeared in Bengali films such as Dada Tumi Dusto Bor (2022) and Tumi Phagun (2020). She is extremely excited about her role as Urmila in Ramayana. According to Surbhi, most of her scenes are with Sita (played by Sai Pallavi), and fewer with Ram (Ranbir Kapoor), but she feels deeply inspired by watching everyone on set perform their roles with such dedication.
