Born in British India
Ratan Tata was born on December 28, 1937, in Bombay (now Mumbai), British India. He was the son of Naval Tata and Soonoo Commissariat. When Ratan was just 10 years old, his parents divorced. He was then raised by his grandmother, Nawazbai Tata, after being adopted from the J.N. Petit Parsi Orphanage, along with his half-brother, Noel Tata.
Education: Ratan Tata received his education from Campion School, Cathedral John Connon School, and Bishop Cotton School. He was also an alumnus of Cornell University and Harvard Business School. Notable classmates included Zubin Mehta, Ashok Birla, Rahul Bajaj, and Yusuf Hamied. In 1991, when J.R.D. Tata resigned as Chairman of Tata Sons, he appointed Ratan Tata as his successor.

Achievements in Industry
During his 21-year tenure, Ratan Tata increased Tata Group's revenue forty-fold and profits fifty-fold. He facilitated acquisitions of Tata Tea by Tetley, Tata Motors by Jaguar Land Rover, and Tata Steel by Corus, transforming the organization from a primarily India-focused group to a global business entity. Additionally, he launched the Tata Nano, aimed at the average Indian consumer, with an initial price of just one lakh rupees.
At the age of 75, Ratan Tata resigned from the chairmanship of Tata Sons on December 28, 2012. However, in 2016, he was appointed as the interim chairman of the group.

Philanthropy and Social Contributions
Ratan Tata initiated several important initiatives in education, healthcare, and rural development. He collaborated with the University of New South Wales to improve water access and established a scholarship fund for Cornell University through the Tata Education and Development Trust. He has made significant donations, including $50 million to Harvard Business School, $35 million to Carnegie Mellon University for research, and a $950 million loan to the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay.

A Unique Love for Dogs
In 2018, when Prince Charles decided to award Ratan Tata for his philanthropy with a Lifetime Achievement Award, he declined to attend due to the ill health of his pet dog.
Ratan Tata also displayed sensitivity towards stray animals. He once shared information about an injured dog near Sion Hospital and offered assistance. He made efforts to raise awareness about the safety of stray animals during the monsoon. One instance of his kindness was when he shared a photo of an employee holding an umbrella to protect a stray dog from the rain. Additionally, Tata Trust opened a small animal hospital in Mahalaxmi, Mumbai, symbolizing his compassion.
