In Bollywood, we often hear people say that a particular star has no etiquette. And when the discussion is about Salman Khan, the remark is almost taken for granted—“He forgets his manners while talking.” What’s ironic is that many who make such comments have never even met Salman in person. Yet, they confidently pass judgments. An old braggart-turned-writer (and occasional producer) even went so far as to claim that when he went to narrate a story to Salman on the sets of one of his films, Salman allegedly set dogs on him. Stories like these are easily found floating around.

Now, just think—does Salman actually take dogs to his shooting sets to chase people away? Obviously not. These are merely fabricated tales that keep surfacing around his name. Especially these days, YouTube is flooded with videos that concoct all kinds of sensational stories about Salman. Anyone watching them is bound to form a negative image of him. We are not here to defend a star, but to share a personal experience—one that we had when we unexpectedly encountered Salman at a particular moment in time.

This incident dates back to the period when Salman had imposed a ban on the press.

Several journalists—reporters, and photographers—had gathered at Film City, Mumbai (now Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagari) for a film’s muhurat shot. We learned that Salman Khan was shooting for one of his films on an adjacent set. Naturally, everyone wanted to go there. But the common reaction was, “What’s the point? He doesn’t talk anyway.” At that time, Salman had decided—without offering any specific reason—not to interact with the press. He neither spoke to reporters nor allowed photographers to take his picture.

There was talk within the industry that this advice had come from his father, Salim Khan. As part of the legendary Salim–Javed duo, Salim Khan knew very well how Amitabh Bachchan had achieved superstardom by distancing himself from the press. He suggested the same formula to Salman. Everyone knows that the formula worked. Negative stories about Salman began to circulate, he remained in the headlines, and his stardom kept soaring.

Photographer Raju Upadhyay and I were about to exit Film City through the main gate when we noticed Salman standing near an open area outside a stage to the left of the gate—with a bicycle. Salman has always loved cycling whenever he gets free time, a habit he maintains even today. On his last birthday, 27 December, he was seen cycling at his Panvel farmhouse while guests were partying. Someone mentioned that his bicycle costs around ₹7 lakh. That day too, he stood there casually with his cycle.

I told Raju, “Let’s talk to Salman. This is a good opportunity.” We walked toward him, and by then Raju had already taken out his camera. Seeing us approach, Salman called out from a distance,
“No… no photos, please!”

Raju immediately put the camera back into his bag. I walked up to Salman and said, “Salman ji, I’m from Mayapuri. We never publish gossip. We are a family magazine. Then why don’t you talk to Mayapuri? Why this distance?”

Salman replied calmly, “I know Mayapuri is a family magazine. I have no reason not to talk to you. But I’ve decided not to talk to anyone. How can I talk to just one person? That would be against ethics, wouldn’t it?”

Saying this, he turned away and started pedaling forward.  Just then, producer Sudhakar Bokade (now late) arrived. The shoot of his film ‘Saajan’ was underway on the nearby set. Raju opened his camera and clicked Bokade ji’s pictures. Salman was cycling back toward us. Bokade ji said, “Now you people should leave. The day Sanju (Sanjay Dutt) is on the set, I’ll ask my PRO Raju Karia to call you. Today, it’s only Salman here—and he won’t talk.”

We then left Film City and headed home. One thought kept running through my mind—even while refusing, Salman spoke about ethics. If there is a ban, then a ban is a ban. Why break one’s own rule for a single person?

This sense of etiquette reflected in his later films as well. Just like a famous dialogue from one of his movies: “If Salman doesn’t listen to anyone, he doesn’t even listen to himself!”
