Joining the Army at Just 16

Yogendra Singh Yadav’s steely determination is evident from the fact that he applied to join the Indian Army at the tender age of 16 years and 5 months. Amid rigorous training and strict discipline, he proved his mettle and became a part of the 18 Grenadiers. At a very young age, he earned a reputation as a fearless and valiant soldier.

The Kargil War and the Challenge of Tiger Hill

When the Kargil War broke out in 1999, Pakistani forces had occupied several strategic peaks. Among the most crucial was Tiger Hill, located at an altitude of 16,500 feet, from where the enemy had a direct line of sight over Indian positions. Recapturing this peak was vital for the Indian Army. On the icy, pitch-dark night of July 3–4, 1999, a unit of 18 Grenadiers was tasked with capturing enemy bunkers atop Tiger Hill.

A 19-Year-Old on a Deadly Mission

The most perilous task was to scale a steep, ice-covered cliff to create a route for the troops. Yogendra Singh Yadav volunteered to lead from the front. Carrying a rope, he began climbing so that his comrades could follow. At that moment, the enemy unleashed a ferocious attack with bullets and grenades.

Fifteen Bullets, Unbroken Spirit

In the onslaught, all members of Yogendra’s team were martyred. Yogendra himself was hit not once or twice, but by more than 15 bullets and shrapnel fragments. His shoulder, waist, and legs were grievously wounded; his body was drenched in blood. Yet, he refused to give up. Gravely injured, he crawled forward to the first enemy bunker and destroyed it with a grenade, killing the soldiers inside. He then assaulted a second bunker and single-handedly neutralized several enemy troops. His extraordinary bravery infused fresh courage into the Indian soldiers, and eventually, the Indian Army hoisted the Tiranga  atop Tiger Hill.

Honored with the Param Vir Chakra

Captain Yogendra Singh Yadav was evacuated by helicopter in critical condition and underwent treatment for nearly one and a half years. Despite enduring 15 bullets, his unyielding will helped him win the battle for life. For his exceptional gallantry, he was awarded India’s highest military honor, the Param Vir Chakra, on January 26, 2000—becoming one of the youngest recipients of the award. In 2021, he was conferred the rank of Honorary Captain and retired from the Army the same year.

Captain Yogendra Singh Yadav’s story teaches every child and young person that no matter how young one is, a great spirit can create history. His saga tells us that true patriotism is not expressed in words, but proven through action and courage.

This Republic Day, let us pledge to be responsible, honest, and brave citizens. The Lion of Tiger Hill will forever remind us that our brave soldiers are always ready to sacrifice everything to protect the honor of the  Tiranga.
