Sanam Saeed on 'Barzakh': Reuniting with Fawad Khan, Embracing Mysticism

Sanam Saeed delves into her role in the upcoming series Barzakh, a project that reunites her with Fawad Khan after more than a decade since their iconic collaboration in Zindagi Gulzar Hai. Directed by the critically acclaimed Asim Abbasi, Barzakh is out now on the OTT Platform - ZEE5 and Zindagi’s YouTube channel with new episodes available every Tuesday and Friday at 8pm IST, a platform known for pioneering impactful content that resonates across borders. Sanam reflects on the challenges and joys of playing Scheherazade in Barzakh, a character who serves as the glue holding the family and mystical world together. She shares her insights on reuniting with co-star Fawad Khan and how Barzakh will make everyone see Fawad in a new light, that of the artist that lies underneath the star that he is, along with this she also shares the challenging yet rewarding environment of the mountains, emphasizing the universal themes of family, love, and loss that the series explores.

Sanam Saeed plays Scheherazade, a character discovered in the mystical mountains as a baby and raised by a local shaman. Her character acts as the bridge between the seen and unseen worlds, carrying the collective grief of those around her and striving to unite the fractured relationships within the narrative.

Reflecting on her experience, Sanam shared, “My character Scheherazade has been designed in a way where she can’t emerge as much and I felt a little stuck with that. She is from this realm or maybe some other realm, she is human, but maybe a little bit not human, we don’t know that and we planned on leaving that ambiguous. It was a difficult balance to find  how Scheherazade could be powerful without being very expressive and impactful and how one could connect with her without her going flat.” She also shared about her co-star Fawad Khan, "It was very important for Fawad to do this role because people need to see his range, how brilliantly he has done this role, and the fact that he’s also an actor and not just a hero. He’s a very good actor and you’ll get to see a very different side of him in the series. It's always a pleasure working with him because he brings his A-game every time.” She also spoke about the challenges they faced while shooting, “We were all up in the mountains, and Barzakh became a family. We were a great source of support and strength to each other. It was really difficult up there in the mountains as it was cold and we had long nights but we all pulled through."
