This beautiful Urdu proverb means that those who help themselves and keep striving, even God help them in their journey. This proverb perfectly describes the journey of Raj and DK, the creative minds behind the hit films Stree and The Family Man. Together, they’ve created some of the most memorable projects in the industry, and they’re back again, this time with Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Varun Dhawan, ready to take the world by storm. However, like everyone else, Raj and DK too had their moments of despair and failure. But despite the setbacks, they never gave up. They kept pushing forward, and eventually, they found their sky. In this article, we delve into their journey, their struggles, and how they overcame those tough times to reach where they are today. How Two Software Engineers Became Filmmakers Raj and DK first met during their engineering days in college, where a strong friendship developed between them. Later, in pursuit of a career, they moved to the United States, where they worked as software engineers. But their true passion lay in filmmaking, and it didn’t take long for them to decide to make films. While still in the U.S., they made their first film, Flavors (2003), an English-language movie. In 2009, they made their Hindi film debut with 99, a dark comedy that was met with average success at the box office but earned Raj and DK recognition in Bollywood for their unique writing and directorial style. Despite this, their subsequent films, like Shor in the City (2011), Go Goa Gone (2013), Happy Ending (2014), and A Gentleman (2017), did not perform well commercially. Turning to the Digital World When their films didn’t succeed at the box office, Raj and DK turned their attention to the rapidly growing world of web series. Their first web series, The Family Man (2019), starring Manoj Bajpayee, was a game-changer. The action-thriller, which portrayed Manoj as a spy trying to balance his work and family life, became immensely popular with audiences. Following that success, Raj and DK went on to create Farzi and Guns & Gulaabs, both of which were also well-received by viewers. The Turning Point: Stree The turning point in Raj and DK’s journey came with the blockbuster Stree. While they didn’t direct the film, Raj and DK wrote the screenplay and their creative input was integral to the film’s success. Stree was a unique blend of comedy and horror, featuring Rajkummar Rao, Shraddha Kapoor, Pankaj Tripathi, and others. Despite being made on a modest budget of just 25 crores, the film grossed an impressive 180.76 crores worldwide, becoming a massive hit at the box office. The New Project: Citadel: Honey Bunny Now, Raj and DK are all set to release their new web series, Citadel: Honey Bunny. DK shares that they are feeling both excitement and pressure with this project. The series is a standalone one, with a small connection to the larger Citadel universe, which has gained popularity worldwide due to the Russo Brothers. However, Raj and DK have focused on creating a version that resonates with Indian audiences. Raj adds that the pressure is real, but he acknowledges that it's part of the job of being a director. He also mentions that they feel even more pressure regarding The Family Man season 3, as the expectations from the audience have skyrocketed. While sequels often do well, they are committed to delivering something fresh to keep the audience hooked. Samantha’s Health Setback and the Team’s Support Samantha Ruth Prabhu, who was initially cast in Citadel: Honey Bunny, faced health challenges that made her reconsider her participation. DK explains that Samantha, concerned about delaying the project, suggested someone else take her place. However, the entire team was determined to wait for her recovery. Even though she was only 50% recovered when the shooting began, Samantha returned to the set and gave her best, making sure her illness didn’t impact her performance. As soon as the cameras started rolling, she would completely transform into her character. Her dedication to professionalism impressed everyone on the set. From Struggles to Success Raj and DK share the story of their most difficult phase, which came after the failure of two big-budget films, Happy Ending and A Gentleman. Despite having a star-studded cast, these films did not perform well at the box office. At that point, many would have given up or succumbed to depression, but Raj and DK chose to analyze their situation. They realized that while the stories were good, the execution and packaging were not up to par. After this realization, they decided to make a fresh start, and that’s when Stree was born. They produced it independently, without any external interference. Stree became their turning point, and since then, they have been on a winning streak with projects like The Family Man, The Family Man 2, Farzi, Guns & Gulaabs, and now Citadel: Honey Bunny. Raj and DK are immensely proud of Stree because it was their own creation. They not only wrote the story but also brought it to life. The success of Stree’s sequel only adds to their pride, and they feel that the film has grown even bigger. A Strong Partnership Talking about their partnership, DK says that analytical people are often said to use the left side of their brain, while creative people use the right side. However, Raj and DK both tend to use the left side more, focusing on logic and reasoning, and that’s what makes their collaboration work. They mention that when they started out, they didn’t have a strong connection to the industry, and they didn’t even attend film school. But their hunger for creativity led them to take the bold step of making their own film, even if it meant using their savings. At that time, they didn’t have a house but had cars, so they sold their cars and invested all their money into their first film. That was their film school, where they learned editing and filmmaking on the go. Taking Responsibility Recalling the early days, Raj and DK share that they both felt equally responsible for the finances and creative aspects of their first film, which they financed through personal savings, friends, and acquaintances. Over time, they learned the importance of managing budgets and taking responsibility for every aspect of filmmaking. While DK is more practical, both of them share the workload equally. They always make decisions together, whether it's about a scene or the overall direction of a project. Raj adds that despite facing many challenges, their journey has been rewarding, and they feel grateful for all that they've achieved. Raj and DK's story is one of resilience and creativity. From selling their cars to fund their first film to becoming some of the most sought-after filmmakers in the industry, their journey is a testament to the power of determination and passion. Today, they continue to captivate audiences with their innovative storytelling and are set to make even bigger waves in the world of film and digital entertainment.
