Discussion has started once again about Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan's 2018 film 'Zero', but this time the reason is not any new film or success, but a sharp criticism. Actor and writer Lilliput, in a recent interview on Red FM podcasts, has strongly criticized Shah Rukh's acting in the film Zero and even called him an imitator of Kamal Haasan.

Questions raised on Shah Rukh's acting

Lilliput

In Zero, Shah Rukh played the role of Baua Singh, a dwarf youth from Meerut. This character was made to look small through VFX, but Lilliput believes that just making the body look small is not enough. He said, "A person who can see can play the role of a blind person, but a person of normal height cannot play the role of a dwarf truthfully."

Lilliput explained that dwarfs think, feel, and behave like normal humans. Their gestures, emotions, and behavior are normal. The only difference is in the body structure. He said that "When you make a hero small only with VFX, then the audience is not able to connect with the real character. They see a famous face that has been made smaller by the computer - not a real dwarf."

"Kamal Haasan was copied"

Lilliput accused Shah Rukh of copying Kamal Haasan's 1989 film 'Appu Raja'. He said, "The subtlety and truthfulness with which Kamal Haasan captured the body language of a dwarf in that character was amazing. The thickness of his fingers, the structure of his face, his gait - everything reflected the reality of dwarfism." On the contrary, according to Lilliput, Shah Rukh's performance "failed to make an impact". He said in sharp words - "You are copying Kamal ji. You are not even the dust of his feet in terms of acting."

Failure and criticism of 'Zero'

Directed by Anand L. Rai, Zero starred Shah Rukh Khan along with Anushka Sharma and Katrina Kaif in the lead roles. The film depicts the journey of love and self-discovery of a dwarf, where he is caught between a scientist suffering from cerebral palsy (Anushka) and a broke film superstar (Katrina). However, this film, made at a huge cost of Rs 200 crore, could only collect Rs 178 crore and proved to be a flop at the box office. After this failure, Shah Rukh took a break from acting for about 4 years.

Comparison with Kamal Haasan's 'Appu Raja'

Kamal Haasan

Kamal Haasan's film 'Appu Raja' was one of the biggest hits of Tamil cinema. In this, he played the role of a dwarf so beautifully that the audience adored him. This film ran in theatres for 200 days and became the biggest Tamil hit of that era.
