Before the film was made, Dharmendra was already an established star in the industry, while Amitabh Bachchan was still struggling. Everyone kept telling me, ‘Don’t make this mistake, young man! In the film, Amitabh played Jai, Dharmendra’s inseparable friend. The Jai-Veeru duo became so iconic that at a restaurant named ‘Garam Dharam’ in Murthal, a replica of the bike used in the film has been placed, along with several paintings of Dharmendra.

Jaya Bachchan’s Silent Role

Jaya Bachchan played Radha, the widowed daughter-in-law of Thakur. The role was short, with hardly any dialogues, yet left a deep impact. Jaya could express emotions even in silence. That was the demand of the role, and she immortalized it.”

The Jaya–Amitabh Magic Scene

One of the most iconic scenes between Jaya Bachchan and Amitabh Bachchan in Sholay was shot during what is called the ‘Magic Hour’—the few minutes just before sunset when the light is at its most beautiful. Sippy recalls, “It was very difficult. The face shouldn’t fall behind the pillar, and every shot had to be precise. It took time, but in the end, the scene turned out magical.”

Doubts over Amjad Khan

There were also doubts when Amjad Khan was cast as Gabbar Singh. Sippy shared, “When I chose Amjad Khan for the role of Gabbar, many people questioned my decision. They said in front of such big stars, Amjad would look like a ‘mouse.’ But little did they know that this very ‘mouse’ would become the biggest star.”

Amjad portrayed the character with such intensity that not only did he silence the critics, but Gabbar Singh went on to become Indian cinema’s most memorable villain. So much so that India’s leading biscuit company, Britannia, even created a special advertisement for Britannia Glucose D Biscuits based on Gabbar’s character, which became hugely popular.

Sholay’s Changed Climax

Ramesh Sippy revealed that the climax of Sholay was changed due to the censor board. Initially, the scene where Thakur and Gabbar fight was different. Sippy explained that the censor board asked him to remove the scene where nails were hammered into Thakur’s shoes, fearing it could create problems later.

He said, “My original climax had Thakur killing Gabbar Singh. But the censor board told us—he’s a police officer, how can he take the law into his own hands? I told them I’ve seen this cliché—where a police officer arrives and stops the hero—a thousand times in films. How can you expect me to change it? But they insisted, and since it was the time of the Emergency, they had all the power. We had no choice but to agree.”

Sippy later reflected, “Now, when I think about it, maybe it was for the best. Perhaps if the original version had stayed, things would have been far more brutal. In hindsight, it worked out well.” In the released version, Gabbar Singh is handed over to the police.
