The idea of 'Sholay' was of the famous writer duo Salim-Javed. They had a short story in which two people were hired to catch a dangerous bandit. This story was narrated to producer GP Sippy and his son Ramesh Sippy (Sholay cult dialogues, everyday conversations), who decided to make it into a big film. Initially, it was planned that the man hired by the two heroes to catch the bandit would be from the army, but later it was changed to a retired police officer, as it was easier to do scenes with the police than with the army. The script was written in Hindustani language, which means a mix of Hindi and Urdu, which made it easier for people to understand.
