Heart-breaking, sad news that veteran South Indian actress B Saroja Devi, 87, passed away in Bengaluru on Monday!
Known for her charming photogenic Indian facial looks, super-acting talent, graceful dancing, and effective expressions, Saroja Devi had acted in several popular Hindi movies. The iconic romantic solo evergreen Hindi ( Rafi-saab) 'ethereal beauty-appreciating' lyrical song 'Teri Pyaari Pyaari Soorat Ko --Kisi Ki Nazar Na Lage which Rajendra Kumar sings on-screen to Saroja-devi in the jubilee hit movie 'Sasural' (1960) is considered among the benchmarks in Hindi lyrical romantic songs.

Saroja-devi was also famous for her powerful roles in Hindi movies Paigham ( 1959) opposite Dilip Kumar, in 'Pyar Kya Toh Darna Kya (1962) opposite Shammi Kapoor, and Preet Na Jaane Reet (1963). In her 1961 movie Opera House ( opposite Ajit), the romantic duet song 'Dekho Mausam Kya Bahaar Hai' was a big hit.

According to news agencies, Saroja died due to old age-related ailments at her residence in Malleswaram, Bengaluru. In Tamil, she was fondly called Kannadathu Paingili (Kannada parrot) and as Abhinaya Saraswathi (Saraswathi-Devi of Expressions) in Kannada.

B. Saroja, who got her first break when she was 17 years old in the Kannada film Mahakavi Kalidasa (1955), is also known later no as the First Female Superstar of Kannada Cinema. The brilliant actress went on to win a National Award for her performance in her debut film.has acted in over 200 films especially in Kannada, Tamil, Telugu and several Hindi movies.

Her Tamil film with another legendary actor and former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, MG Ramachandran, Nadodi Mannan (1958), made her one of the top actresses of Tamil cinema. Although she married in 1967, Saroja Devi continued to be in public demand, especially in the Tamil film industry.

Lakhs of Fans and Celebrities took to social media to pay their respects. Industry tracker Sreedhar Pillai wrote of her legacy, “SarojaDevi (87), the yesteryear popular actress, passed away in Bengaluru. In the golden era of South Indian cinema, she ruled! Who can forget the romantic MGR-Saroja Devi pairing in blockbusters like Enga Veetu Pillai, Anbe Vaa, etc?”

Southside regional star actress-politician Khushbu Sundar ( who has also acted in several Hindi movies)  deeply mourned her death in a heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter). Khushboo wrote, “An era of golden cinema comes to an end. SarojaDevi amma was the greatest of all times. No other female actor in the south has ever enjoyed the name and fame as she has. Such a lovable, adorable soul she was. Had a great rapport with her. My trip to Bengaluru was incomplete without meeting her. And whenever in Chennai, she would call. Will miss her immensely. Rest in peace, Amma. Om Shanti. SarojaDevi.”
