Heart Racing: First Diwali Release or Being Part of the Universe?

Ayushmann: Both! This is my first Diwali release, which is on every actor’s wish list. This is my second film with Maddock after Bala, and it’s been great working with them again. Thamma is the next chapter in our country’s most successful horror-comedy universe. In this film, we show how a ‘Betaal’ comes into being, and the name Thamma is inspired by Ashwatthama, symbolizing power and mystery. Working with Rashmika and Nawaz sir was a wonderful experience.

A New Look and Genre: How Exciting or Challenging Was It?

Rashmika: It was a lot of fun. This is my first horror-comedy film, and honestly, the exact nature of the character will be clear only after watching the film. The genre was completely new for me, no reference or fixed framework existed. That made it very interesting and challenging. On the first day, our entire team — Paresh sir, Nawaz sir, Ayushmann, and I — were shooting on the same set, and our chemistry clicked immediately. There was no forced effort. We had extensive discussions for the character preparation because there was no reference for a ‘Betaal’-like character. Everything had to be created from scratch. Natural Performance: Any Personal Experiences or Observations Helped?

Ayushmann: It was interesting because my character is a ‘Betaal’, but no one had ever seen a Betaal before. So, there was no reference for this role. We relied heavily on directors Aditya sir and Amar sir. I fully trusted their vision — like, “Sir, you guide me, and I’ll follow.” I mostly read non-fiction, biographies, news, and take inspiration from real life. Rashmika: During the look test, there were many discussions about costumes, hair, and makeup, which was crucial because we were building the character from zero. Ayushmann: Thamma is a disruptive film. As I said earlier, the concept of a ‘Betaal’ hasn’t been explored in Hindi cinema before. This is the first time this topic is being addressed. For me, it’s new too, because until now, I’ve mostly done realistic films. This is my first venture into a fantasy and supernatural world. Moreover, this is the biggest film of my career so far, releasing on Diwali, so it’s very important that it reaches as many people as possible. I believe Thamma is that film.

Future Goals: After Pushpa and Animal, What’s Next?

Rashmika: Honestly, I never understood the idea of being ‘number one.’ Who defines it — the highest collection? The best film choices? The most powerful performances? There’s no fixed measure. I always follow my path. If I’m doing a film today, I want to do something tomorrow that surprises the audience — sometimes performance-based, sometimes just entertainment, sometimes light-hearted, sometimes strong roles. I don’t want the audience to predict what I’ll do next. That’s exciting for me and for my audience. Not every film will appeal to everyone. Some films are for certain audiences, others for different ones. I want to do all kinds of films so I don’t get typecast.
