'Sharmeelee', released in 1971, is one of those films of its era that, while promoted as a romantic story, actually contained layers of suspense, thrill, and complex emotions. It's a love story, but also a tale of mistaken identity, conflicting trust, and duty. In an era when most films were based on simple romance, 'Sharmeelee' surprised and delighted audiences.

The film was produced by Subodh Mukherjee and directed by Samir Ganguly. The story was written by the renowned author Gulshan Nanda, whose stories always contained a blend of romance and mystery. Adapting Gulshan Nanda's writing for the screen was not easy, but Samir Ganguly brought it to life with great balance. (Sharmeelee 1971 Bollywood film analysis)

The story begins with Captain Ajit Kapoor, who is at an army base and, while returning home on leave, stops at a resort where a party is in progress. There, he meets a lively and confident girl. A strange attraction develops between them. Later, when Ajit returns home, his marriage is arranged, and he goes to meet a girl named Kanchan. Upon seeing Kanchan, he believes she is the same girl he met at the party. He immediately agrees to the marriage. The wedding takes place. But the truth slowly emerges: Kanchan is not the girl he met at the resort. Angered by this deception, Ajit distances himself from Kanchan. It turns out that Kanchan and Kamini are twin sisters. One is shy and quiet, the other outspoken and fearless. This is where the story moves beyond romance and takes on the form of a suspense thriller. Ajit searches for Kamini and eventually finds her. Kamini uses her emotional manipulation to confuse Ajit. Suddenly one fine day , Ajit's army colonel shows him a picture of an enemy spy and assigns him the task of capturing her. Ajit is stunned to see that the picture is of Kamini. From here, the story takes another new turn, and ultimately, both sisters don't hesitate to sacrifice for each other. Shashi Kapoor played the role of Captain Ajit Kapoor with great ease. This film is considered a milestone in Rakhee's career because she played a double role and portrayed the contrasting personalities of the two sisters distinctly. On one hand, there was Kanchan's silence and sacrifice, and on the other, Kamini's carefree nature and confidence. The difference between the two characters is clearly visible, without any artificiality. Nasir Hussain, in the role of Father Joseph, provided emotional support to the story. The heart of the film 'Sharmeelee' is its music. Music director Sachin Dev Burman composed songs for this film that are still popular today.
The lyrics written by Neeraj are heartfelt and deeply moving. Songs like "Reshmi Ujala Hai Makhmali Andhera," "Khilte Hain Gul Yahan," "Megha Chhaye Aadhi Raat," and "Aaj Madhosh Hua Jaye Re" were on the lips of every young man and woman of that era. It is said that S.D. Burman worked meticulously on the tunes of these songs, and a completely silent environment was maintained during the recording.
An interesting fact related to the film is that the technology available at that time was very limited for showing Rakhee's double role. Many scenes were shot repeatedly to clearly show the difference between the two sisters. However, the chemistry between Shashi Kapoor and Rakhee in the romantic scenes were so natural that many scenes were approved in the first take itself. It is also said that Gulshan Nanda himself used to visit the set during the shooting and discuss the nuances of the story.

The 'Sharmeelee' s soundtrack became an instant hit with Indian audiences upon its release, with several songs featuring in the top 10 of the 1971 Binaca Geetmala chart. It is said that during the film's grand premiere in Delhi, Ranjit had invited several members of his family. During the interval, when the cast was called onto the stage, Ranjit noticed that all his family members had left. He was surprised by this. When he returned home after the premiere, he found everyone angry with him. When he asked for the reason, he was scolded. Ranjit's mother angrily asked him, "How did you even get into the house? Get out! Rakhee is such a sweet girl, and you did such terrible things to her in the film?"
Hearing this, Ranjit burst into laughing and explained to his mother that it was all acting and not real.
