The Secret of Devkaali Trailer: On Monday, April 14, the trailer of The Secret of Devkaali — the upcoming film directed and produced by actor-filmmaker Neeraj Chauhan — was officially launched. The event saw the presence of lead cast members including veteran actor Sanjay Mishra and actor Gurung Malhotra. The team interacted with the media, answered questions, and gave some exciting insights into the making of the film.

You’re a senior actor, and this is Neeraj Chauhan’s directorial debut. How was the experience working with a new team?

Sanjay Mishra-  Everyone on this film was new — including the director. I usually work with established names like Indra Kumar or Anees Bazmee (Bhool Bhulaiyaa), but working with new directors gives a very different thrill. The Secret of Devkaali was a unique experience for me — it has elements I’ve never explored before: mythology, secrets, reincarnation… I was genuinely excited to be part of it.

Intense, Gritty & Unapologetic

What is the subject or core theme of the film?
Neeraj Chauhan- The story is deeply rooted in suspense, with a strong mythological backdrop. Years ago, a terrible sin was committed, and the village has been under a curse ever since. The film explores that mystery. It centers around the secret of Devkaali and involves 3–4 different tribal communities — their legends, secrets, and beliefs.

Do you think today’s youth can connect with such a theme?
Neeraj Chauhan-  (Smiles) "People will consume what you serve them." We’re simply trying to bring something fresh and different to the audience. There’s a lot of repetitive content these days, and people are hungry for new concepts. That’s what we’re aiming for — something unexpected.

Content is changing — do you feel the shift?
Neeraj Chauhan- Change is natural. A few years ago, romantic and action films dominated, but today’s generation — heavily influenced by social media and trends — is looking for something that stands out. We’re trying to create exactly that: something relatable yet refreshing.

Your character ‘Mudra’ seems very different. Was it a challenge to portray?
Gurung Malhotra- Absolutely. Many people couldn’t even recognize me after seeing the trailer. I underwent a complete transformation — including four shades of darker makeup — to lose my actual identity. It wasn’t just physical; it was about fully embodying a different person.

How did you prepare for such an intense role?
Gurung Malhotra-  I was cast at the last minute, but Neeraj gave me a brilliant character brief. On set, we would discuss each and every expression — every emotion — shot by shot. Honestly, I think Neeraj worked even harder on each character than we did.

You've been part of films that haven't always succeeded commercially. Like Sikandar with Salman Khan recently. What do you take from such experiences?
Sanjay Mishra-  If there was a guaranteed formula for success, no one would ever fail. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t — that’s just life. Every film teaches you something. If someone only ever sees success, we might as well put up their statue!

Advice to young actors?
Sanjay Mishra- These guys are doing more than just taking tips — they’re living their roles. We’d even rehearse each other’s dialogue to understand every character more deeply. This film was a true collaboration, a beautiful journey.

Learning from senior artists?
Neeraj Chauhan- Absolutely. Every actor and every personality brings something to learn from. As artists, our subconscious is like a memory bank. We draw from every life experience — a driver, a vendor, a friend — and that shapes our performance. For me, working with Sanjay sir was a dream come true.

Favorite scene from the film?
Sanjay Mishra-  Shooting in Mathura was magical. We reached a day early and just soaked in the place. It didn’t feel like work — more like a family trip. Every scene felt special.

Gurung Malhotra-  For me, it was a scene without any dialogues — just pure emotion. Neeraj was very particular about every expression. That scene involved anger, pain, and revenge — all in one frame. It tested me as an actor.

The Secret of Devkaali

Why should audiences watch The Secret of Devkaali? What makes it special?
Gurung Malhotra- Today’s content is often trendy but lacks soul. This film brings back the essence of what made Bollywood special — rich stories and deep characters. It's suspenseful, emotional, and grounded. Every department has worked with full passion, especially Neeraj.

How many songs are in the film?
Neeraj Chauhan-  There are just two songs — one promotional and one theme song. We’ve kept the music minimal to stay focused on the story. We're very confident in the content.

The Secret of Devkaali marks the Bollywood debut of Neeraj Chauhan, who not only stars in the film but also produces and directs it. The film is set to release in theatres across India on April 18. With a mix of suspense, mythology, emotion, and mystery — it promises to be a gripping cinematic experience.
