Vicky on Sambhaji Maharaj's Legacy

Talking about the legendary Sambhaji Maharaj, Vicky said, “Sambhaji fought 127 battles by the age of 30 and never lost a single one. He knew 13 languages, and his story continues to inspire us all. He carried forward his father’s legacy and etched his name in history with golden letters.”

Vicky also shared his preparation for the role, saying, “When I was working on Sam Bahadur, Laxman Sir offered me this film. He told me that he would teach me everything, from horseback riding to standing on two legs of a horse and fighting in battle. However, in comparison to what Sambhaji Maharaj went through, this seemed like nothing. Physically, it was a tough film for me, but it’s also one of the best films I’ve done.”

Director Laxman Utekar, in his address at the Kala Ghoda Festival, began with the chants of “Jai Bhavani, Har Har Mahadev.” He shared his vision for the film, stating that people outside Mumbai and Maharashtra were not very familiar with Sambhaji Maharaj's story, and it was important to bring it to the wider audience. “This is why I decided to make the film, to tell the story of a warrior who always led from the front, which is the true hallmark of a warrior. We should always keep such qualities in mind while doing our work,” said Laxman.

Laxman also offered advice to young filmmakers, saying, “Always be ready to answer any questions about your work. You need to have an answer for every question. Why did you do it this way? It takes a lot of courage and integrity to make a film. You have to be fully committed to telling your story, and even then, you must be prepared for criticism.”

Chhaava will hit the theaters on February 14. In this film, Vicky Kaushal is joined by pan-India actress Rashmika Mandanna, who plays the role of Sambhaji Maharaj’s wife, Yesubai.
