BOLLYY EXCLUSIVE: TULSI KUMAR WANTS TO SING FOR ALIA BHATT

Tulsi Kumar

Tulsi Kumar is the owner of a sweet and soothing voice that is capable enough to entice you the moment you hear her. The singer who belongs to a family that is the father of music industry in Bollywood, still has managed to make her own space in Bollywood all by herself, owing to her soft singing skills. The young and talented singer has music in her genes. In an exclusive interview with Bollyy, the singer talked about balancing her personal and professional life, singing for Alia Bhatt, future projects and much more.

Being a mom now, how do you balance your personal and professional life?

"Being a mom, I think is a full-time job. You have to be fully committed to your baby, obviously, you brought up a life. I was on 3 months leave from work, but now I am back to work. I think every woman should try and balance the difficult. Being a mom is a blessing, and also having your career is a blessing. Maintaining the right balance between the two, thoda sa mushkil hota hai (It is a little difficult) but koshish kari jaye toh (but if tried) I think every lady can do it. So, yes I completely enjoyed it."

You were recently awarded International Women's Day Award, congratulations! How do you cherish this award?

"I think it is a great honor being a woman, being honored for your contribution in the field of music. Iss tarha ke jab recognition milti hain, ek platform se (When one get such kind of recognition through a platform) by the government of child and women development cell, it is very encouraging when you are awarded, you feel encouraged that I am doing something good, and I should do something even good in future. I take these awards and honors as encouragement to be performing even better in my future."

Which is that one award that you will cherish for the rest of your life?

"I think I need more recognition, but last year I was awarded with IFFA award for Best Playback singer for Soch Na Sake, I think that was one of very big platform, there was lots of public and this recognition came to me, that is my most cherished award."

As you have done the remake of Old hit songs like "Mere Rashk-E-Qamar" "Soch Na Sake", are you in favour of remakes?

"I think in my career, I have done many recreated songs, "Ae Mere Humsafar" from film All Is Well, then I had sung single, "Mainu Ishq Da Lagaya Rog" from Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahi, "Soch Na Sake" which is recreated version of a Punjabi song. So, I think if a song is recreated beautifully, a new thought is added to it, like only the hook line is same, the whole song is new, I do not think there is any harm if the song is treated well because a remake song already has a certain fan following, and once you recreate it, there are more comparisons. I think if it is done nicely, it is a good thing. And people are liking the recreated songs."

One celebrity that you wish to lend your voice to?

"I have actually lend my voice to pretty much all the leading ladies like Deepika, Sonakshi, Kangana Ranaut. Kareena Kapoor also I have sung for. I think for Alia Bhatt, I have not yet rendered. And I think she is a super talented actress, I would definitely like to render my voice for her. I was going to sing a song for her, but that could not happen at the end moment. Definitely I would want to do something for Alia Bhatt."

Your song "Mere Papa" is something that every child will relate to. How was it for you to sing that song or work in the video? Was it emotionally breaking?

"Actually that is the song very close to my heart. This is not a song, but our dedication for our papa by me, my sister Khushali and my brother Bhushan on 30 years of T-series, a tribute to Gulshan Kumar show for Colors TV, that is when we dedicated this song. While performing or creating the song, I was extremely emotional, not just me, my brother, my sister, my mom, my entire family, and this emotion was like, whoever listened this song, had wet eyes, everybody related it to their father. It was not a song just for my father, it connected to all the children. I think this song had that emotion and connect, even during the performance or when I heard the song, I was extremely emotional."

Your sister Khushali often features in your videos, what bond do you both share?

"We share a great bond personally, and now professionally also. I think this is our sixth single together that I am rendering my voice. Recently, I had collaboration for Guru Randhawa, it is called "Raat Kamaal Hai" and Khushali is featuring in the video and Guru and I have the vocals in the song. It is always good when Khushali and me are working together because creatively she handles the video department and I handle the music department. Definitely we have arguments at times, but that is for the good and betterment of the song. I think now we have creatively started understanding each other and what we both are good at, so we focus at our fields. So, it is good to do something together, so that we can learn from each other. We both are so connected on personal level, that professionally we both kind of sync with each other very well. So, for everything, I fall back on her and she falls back on me. So, I think it is the best feeling to have a sister whom you can share your personal stuff with, and also work professionally. Nothing like it."

A Bollywood song of recent times, you wish you had sung?

"I think the recreated song "Tamma Tamma again" from Badrinath Ki Dulhaniya. It is my all time favorite song and I really felt that my voice would have gelled very well with this song, because when I perform this song in my live shows, people feel I have sung it originally. I think this song was maintained by the old singer Bappi Da. I think this is my all time favorite song, I wish I could have sung that particular track."

Any singer of recent times that is your favorite? And why?

"Recent times, I think Arijit is everybody's favourite. So, I got an opportunity to work with Arijit, and we have many romantic songs like "Hum Maar Jaenge", "Soch Na Sake", "Salamaat" from film Sarabhjit, so, I think it is Arijit Singh."

Can you share a little about your next projects?

"I am doing two cover versions, for my YouTube channel, and apart from that I am doing a song for an upcoming film Satyamev Jayate and it is a beautiful romantic song. And then I am also working on another single of mine which is under the process of making. And there are couple of more un-titled films that I have already done playback for. So, lots more to come."
