OTT Stories to Enjoy and Reflect on World Music Day

Music has always been an integral part of the Indian ethos and has been incorporated into theater as well as cinema. This World Music Day, OTT Tata Play Theater brings a presentation of stories where music plays a special role. 

Bandish Bandits

This Amazon Prime Video series is created by Amritpal Singh Bindra and Anand Tiwari. It stars Ritwik Bhowmik as a debutante Hindustani classical musician who is introduced to the world of pop music when he meets Tamannaah Sharma (Shreya Chaudhary). This meeting helps him discover new aspects of his music and a conflict between tradition and modernity is born. Then they come together to create a fusion of music that explores new heights. The series also stars Naseeruddin Shah, Sheeba Chaddha, and Atul Kulkarni. The film's soundtrack album and background score are composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy.

Heeramandi: Diamond Market

The mesmerizing music of this Netflix story directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali remains in the top spot. With musical pieces like 'Sakal Ban', 'Nazariya Ki Maari', 'Saiyaan Hato Jao' and 'Chaudhvi Shab', (चौध्वी शब) the show celebrates not only classical music but also the traditional songs of Amir Khusro. Bhansali has brought these creations alive on the small screen with cinematic flair. His passion for art imbues each song's illustrations with unforgettable beauty.

Piya Beharupiya'

This musical by Zee Theater is an entertaining musical adaptation of Shakespeare's comedy 'Twelfth Night'. Set to the unique tunes of folk music, 'Piya Beharupiya' revisits the complex love stories of Duke Orsino, Olivia, Cesario, and Viola. This audience-favorite play has traveled the world and been staged at many prestigious venues including Shakespeare's Globe Theater in London. Music and dance have played a huge role in its spectacular success. Directed by Atul Kumar, the teleplay also stars Geetanjali Kulkarni, Amitosh Nagpal, Sagar Deshmukh, Mansi Multani, Mantra Mugdh, Gagan Riar, Neha Saraf, Trupti Khamkar and Saurabh Nair. Watch it on 21st June at Tata Play Theatre.

Aaj Rang Hai

Classical music and syncopated poems of Amir Khusro make this Zee Theater teleplay very special. The story is about a neighborhood where Benny Bai, a former sitcom singer, often draws on his musical knowledge to find answers to life's questions and give advice to his neighbors. He and his neighbors live in effortless harmony until the fire of communalism reaches them and their lives are changed forever.  With music and dance 'Aaj Rang Hai' reflects the many shades of humanity. Directed by Saurabh Srivastava and written by Purva Naresh, the musical drama stars Trishala Patel, Sarika Singh, Prerna Chawla, Pritika Chawla, Purva Naresh herself, Pawan Uttam, Imran Rashid, Sukant Goyal, Nishi Doshi and Rajshri Deshpande. Watch it on 21st June on Airtel Spotlight, Dish TV Theater Active, and D2H Theater Active.

Ladies Sangeet

This work of Purva Naresh uses music in the narrative to highlight the conflict between tradition and modernity. It also discusses patriarchy, gender dilemmas, and personal freedom. The story revolves around Radha's marriage with Siddharth at her ancestral home, interspersed with several musical sequences. His large family is all set to celebrate the occasion in Bollywood style, but many tensions are brewing within. With humor, sharp insights, and spectacular musical sequences, this teleplay from Zee Theater not only entertains but also provokes thought. Directed by Suman Mukhopadhyay, the teleplay also stars Joy Sengupta, Nidhi Singh, Siddhant Karnik, Lovleen Mishra, Harsh Khurana, Sarika Singh, Monica Gupta, Niranjan Iyengar, Mallika Singh and Nivedita Bhargava. Watch it on the OTT platform Tata Play Theater from 21st June.
