It has been reported that 30% of women in India in the age group of 15-49 experience physical violence since the age of 15. According to a study by The National Family Health Survey (NFHS-4) further reaveled 6% women in the same age group have experienced sexual violence at least once in their lifetime. About 31% of women experience physical violence (27%) and emotional violence (13%) from their partners. Even though a physical injury is the result of such violence yet only 14% of women sought help from either informal support systems of family and friends or institutional support to stop it.

Bollywood film actress of Stree, Dabangg 2 fame (and more recently seen in Amazon’s Inside Edge) Flora Saini is a survivor of domestic abuse herself. Marking Nov 25 as International day for Elimination of Violence against women, Flora speaks as a anti-domestic violence advocate.

Speaking on the International Day for Elimination of Violence against women Flora Saini, said, “Abuse and victim blaming are often just passing discussions in India. In India, patriarchal attitudes are deeply entrenched in people’s value system which in turn creates a discriminatory attitude towards women.  As a survivor, I understand the strength I need to believe in my support system and break the silence. My abuse does not define me; it is a part of my memory that has allowed me to identify my strengths better.”

There are several policies on gender based violence from traditional  Dowry Prohibition Act (1961), Amendments to the Indian Penal Code, 1862 (1986), Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act (2005), Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention Prohibition and 5 Redressal) Act (2013). Despite the well thought out policies to prevent Violence against women, India was ranked as one of the world's most dangerous countries for women by Thomson Reuters Foundation's annual poll.

She further added, “It is important to break the silence and seek help from our support system. It’s necessary that we say no and instill this confidence to the larger India that still struggles with these barriers. Our system is not perfect but efforts are being taken to better it and it is our duty to drive this change. Let’s use social platforms positively to talk on burgeoning issues like domestic violence with openness and less of a taboo.”
