Vinod Khanna was also going to act with Amitabh Bachchan in 'Namak Halal', but since he had announced his retirement from films, director Prakash Mehra was going to cast Raj in this film. When he got a call from a director like Prakash Mehra, he was more scared and less happy due to an earlier incident. Earlier Raj Babbar was going to be a part of Dilip Kumar's film but things did not work out at the last moment. That's why Raj Babbar was surprised.

Raj Babbar continued his talk and asked Prakash Mehra if he could get a place to stay in Mumbai for a year. He sent Raj Babbar a flight ticket and then Raj Babbar came to Mumbai with just Rs 100 in his pocket. He had a scooter which he sold and gave that money to his wife as his daughter was just born. He told his wife that he was going for a year. But just when he thought everything was going well, Raj Babbar was fired from 'Namak Halal' because a lot of people did not want to work with him. Raj Babbar then told Prakash Mehra that since he had promised to work with him, he should allow him to stay in Mumbai for at least a year and the director agreed. In all likelihood, the role that was supposed to be played by Raj Babbar was played by Shashi Kapoor. 'Namak Halal' also featured Smita Patil, Parveen Babi and Waheeda Rehman.
