Deven Verma was born on 23 October 1937 in Pune, Maharashtra. He was a famous comedian of Hindi films in Indian cinema. He won everyone's hearts with his brilliant comic acting in Hindi films. Deven Verma worked in about 149 films. 'Golmaal', 'Angoor', 'Khatta Meetha', 'Nastik', 'Rang Birangi' etc. were some of the big films of his career. He also produced and directed some films including 'Besharam'. He was also awarded the Filmfare Award for Best Comedian for the films 'Chori Mera Kaam', 'Chor Ke Ghar Chor' and 'Angoor'.

He was brought up in Pune. He received his graduation degree in Political Science and Sociology from here. Deven Verma was the son-in-law of Ashok Kumar, a famous actor of his time and popularly known as 'Dada Muni'. He was married to Ashok Kumar's youngest daughter Roopa Ganguly.

Deven Verma came to Mumbai after completing his studies in 1959. He did not face much difficulty in starting his film career. He was the son-in-law of 'Dada Muni' Ashok Kumar. He worked continuously in 'BR Films' and 'Yash Raj Films' because Dada Muni had close relations with these banners. Deven Verma entered films in 1961 with the film 'Dharamputra' under the banner of B.R. Chopra. It was directed by Yash Chopra. He had a small role in this film, which no one paid much attention to. His performance in the 1964 film 'Suhagan' caught the attention of the producers. He had a negative role in the film 'Devar', while in the second film 'Mohabbat Zindagi Hai' he played a comic role. Both films were successful at the box office.

This was a crucial time for Deven Verma. He had to choose between comedy and villainy. He showed interest in comedy. The biggest specialty of Deven Verma's acting was that he could easily get into the character. He had not come into the film world just to act. He had to show his extra energy by becoming a producer-director.

In the film 'Chori Mera Kaam' (1975), Deven Verma appears on screen as Parveen Bhai Publisher. As soon as a book is published, everyone's attention is drawn towards him. This role was taken further a few years later in the film 'Chor Ke Ghar Chor' (1978), as is being done these days in sequel films. The memorable films of his career were - 'Golmaal' (1979), 'Angoor' (1982) and 'Rang Birangi' (1983). Deven got awards as well as a reputation by working in the films of sensitive directors like Basu Chatterjee, Hrishikesh Mukherjee, and Gulzar. Many films have been made in India on Shakespeare's famous play 'Comedy of Errors', of which 'Angoor' directed by Gulzar is considered the best. Apart from these films, Deven Verma played memorable roles in many films and relieved the tension of the audience. He never resorted to vulgarity for comedy and always made the audience laugh through his style of dialogue delivery and body language. The audience was ready to laugh as soon as he appeared on screen.

Deven Verma was last seen on the big screen in the film Calcutta Mail'. He played the role of today's superstar Aamir Khan's father in the famous comedy film 'Andaz Apna Apna'.

Apart from Hindi films, Verma also worked in some Marathi and Bhojpuri films. He died on 2 December 2014 in Pune due to a heart attack and kidney failure.
