In those days, big stars of Mumbai had to be invited to FTII to talk to and encourage the acting students.

Dharmendra was invited on popular demand as all the students unanimously wanted him and Dharmendra could not disappoint them and personally went to Pune to attend the function organized by the students.

A young man with a lean body and a thin mustache and a prominent scar on his face was one of the active organizers of the evening, he tried every possible way to make the evening memorable as Dharmendra was his favorite actor.

My senior Mr. RM Kumtakar, who was both a senior reporter and photographer, was also a fan of Dharmendra and he took up the assignment of covering the event only because he could take some special pictures of Dharmendra with the students.

During the ceremony itself, all the students rushed to Dharmendra and requested to take a photo with the son of the clay hero of their dreams and the humble Dharmendra made them all happy.

But the young man with a scar on his face requested Mr Kumtakar to take some "exclusive" photographs with his favorite actor and Mr Kumtakar went out of his way to satisfy the boy from Bihar and promised the boy that he would give him the same. He had taken photographs of himself and his hero when he came to Bombay after completing his course.

Time passed and the young man from Bihar passed out from FTII and also signed films like Dev Anand's "Gambler" and Gulzar's "Mere Apne" and soon became one of the most popular and beloved villains of Hindi films.

But he had not forgotten his promise to hand over the photographs taken of Mr. Kumtakar and Dharmendra with him at FTII. Shatru as he was now known, kept looking for My Kumtakar in every party and function in Bombay. He asked all his friends to somehow find Mr. Kumtakar and when he found Mr. Kumtakar, he told him that the photographs taken of him and Dharmendra with him were very precious to him as he had told his family in Patna about it and Mr. Kumtakar had told his family about it. His favorite line, is "Karte hain, karte hain.". Many months passed and Shatru had grown into a very big star but he still kept pursuing Mr. Kumtakar who kept telling him, "Karte hain karte hain" until Shatru had no hope of getting the photographs. He also asked Dharmendra to speak to Mr. Kumtakar, but he still couldn't find him as Mr. Kumtakar kept telling him, "Karte hain, aage zaroor kar denge". And Shatru made the story of his photos taken with Dharmendra a kind of joke, which he repeated and found some rare pleasure in telling this story to all his friends and anyone he met anywhere...

I started attending parties and functions where I made most of my friends. And Shatru was one of my best friends until he found out that I was working with Mr. Kumtakar in "Screen". He kept embarrassing me by begging Mr. Kumtakar to take my pictures.

It took me several months to speak to Mr. Kumtakar about the photographs and he kept deferring the issue along the same lines, “Do it, do it”.

I finally succeeded in getting the negatives of the photographs and was very eager to hand them over to Shatru. And when I finally met Shatru at a party in Sun N Sand Hotel, I had lost the negatives that Mr. Kumtakar had handed over to me with great difficulty.

When I faced the enemy I was totally embarrassed and he said in his own style, "After how many thousands of years today my friend Ali will give me my negative". And I died many deaths before I could tell him that I had lost the negative and he laughed like he could and still can laugh and said, "This is a perfect example of from the frying pan to the fire"

He might have taken it lightly, but I couldn't. I didn't show him my face for almost a year until we came face to face one evening at the same Sun N Sand hotel and I tried my best to avoid him and even ran away from the party if I could. But he called my name and when I went to him, he put his arms around me and said, "Kya jaane de na yaar, one or two photographs are nothing compared to a friend? Tu mere se itna darling na kar, main tujhe woh photographs ke baare mein kabhi nahin kahaan. But I will never leave Kumtakar's children. They not only lost the photographs but stole my most beautiful dreams."

Shatru could never have dreamt of working with his hero, but he did not do one or two films with his hero Dharamji, but five films, the most important of which are "Dost" and "Qayamat". It has been almost forty-five years since that incident about those pictures, but Shatru has still not forgotten and remembers it with all love and affection.
