‘My visual art work inspired by Canadian Gothic literature’

Posted On: 24 NOV 2022 3:53PM by PIB Mumbai

#IFFIWood, 24 November 2022

Set amongst the sparse landscape of an isolated farming community in Canada, four adolescent girls’ band together to escape their desolate lives. By reclaiming an abandoned farmhouse as their own, they form an intense and obsessive bond that leads them to a dark place where their innermost fears and desires destroy their only safe place. Showcased in the ‘World of Cinema’ section of the 53rd International Film Festival of India The Young Arsonists directed by Canadian visual artist Sheila Pye gives a glimpse into the ways these girls manifest their desperation into a collective rebirth. Speaking at the media & delegates interaction organised by PIB at IFFI 53, Director of the film Sheila Pye said that the story drew a lot of inspiration from her child hood and most of the characters are from real people she knew in her life.

In reference to the abandoned farm house imagery used in the film, Sheila Pye said that as a child her hobby was breaking into abandoned homes in the country side. “I like to experience that feeling of fear, excitement, wonder and like exploring stuff. My first short film was made when I am 18 and I broke into an abandoned house with a tripod to shoot the stuff. Such experiences would have contributed a lot towards the unconscious inspiration for my films,” she added.

Shiela Pye also acknowledged that a lot of her visual art work is definitely inspired by Canadian Gothic literature. She further said that the style might have seeped into her films by instinct. Responding to queries, she said that economic realities definitely form a part of the life of the main protagonists’.

The girl characters in the film who escape to a farm house from the myriad problems in their life are haunted by conflicts as if there is no escape from their burdens. The ‘young arsonists’ in the end also set fire to the safe house which they considered there fiefdom. Is there no scope for a bit more hope or optimism in the worldly life? Well, according to Sheila Pye, the visual metaphor of fire used in the film is not a destructive force, but an element which purifies the overburdened and sad life. “When the protagonist burns down the house in the end, I didn’t intend to show it as a negative thing, but a positive thing. She finally found the freedom, face the reality and is ready to move on. Life is full of necessary contrasts. I don’t want to have a necessarily happy or sad ending for my film. I did see a lot of hope,” she described.

Brought the mastery over visual arts into the film? To this, Shiela Pye replied that even before writing the script she assigned her main characteristics particular colour- one girl is red, one girl is yellow, one girl is blue and one girl is green. And it became my principle to start exploring the girls, she elaborated. On the transition from short films to feature films, she said that the process was interesting, challenging and incredible. Agatha Delsorbo, Producer of the film informed that after IFFIThe Young Arsonists will be screened in Cairo Film Festival.

The Young Arsonists which had its Asian premiere at IFFI 53 earlier had the film’s World Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival 2022.

Synopsis

Set in 1980s rural Canada, director and visual artist Sheila Pye’s haunting feature debut follows a group of teenage girls – each suffering some form of family trauma – whose relationships with one another are both strengthened and tested over the course of a summer.

Friends I Well Wishers I the Village

The film production house based in Mumbai has mentors in Anurag Kashyap and Alan McAlex.

Alongwith the above, filmmakers Sriram Raghavan, Vikramaditya Motwane and producer Sanjay Routray have extended support too.

Amarkatha 1 (1)

The production house has collaborated with the editor Abhro Banerjee, IPR lawyer, Abhishek Malhotra (TMT Law Practice), Sidharth Meer (Bridge Postworks), Music Composer Mangesh Dhakde and Mauli Singh (Loudspeaker Media).

Discussing these collaborations and the bouquet of films along with their own home production JORAM that Makhijafilm is representing at the Bazaar, Producer & Makhijafilm Partner Anupama Bose believes that ’it takes a village to bring up a child. It takes a Village of Creators and Conscious Viewers / Patrons to make a film...wherein ‘make’ is inclusive of creating the cinematic work and then enabling it to find its audiences & niches. The biggest example for us in our context is Zee Studios which is our producing partner on such an Indie spirited film - we share our intention of retaining the creative vision and the conscience of the film - they are enabling us to fly with film festivals and eventually a sales and release journey."

JORAM Director & Partner, Makhijafilm, Devashish Makhija, speaking about the film, further elaborates, “It is with a fiercely indie spirit that JORAM has been made… the films that Makhijafilm seeks to collaborate with and support will also be films that have a beating Indie heart, and a spirit of community in their making, even if they may be backed by a studio as visionary and diverse in its choices as Zee Studios. ‘JORAM’ itself is a survival thriller – in which a father is desperately on the run with his three month old baby girl – set against the giant canvas of displacement, iron ore mining, development and the environment.”

KUNDE POSTER 2

Speaking about their collaboration with Makhijafilm, Shariq Patel - the CBO, Zee Studios said, "I have been a fan of Dev’s work for the longest time. So when he decided to turn Producer with Joram and got us this script, we grabbed it pretty much immediately. And it has been a great journey so far and we can’t wait to take this film across festivals, across the world."

<![CDATA[IFFI 53 witnesses Masterclass on Gender Participation in Hindi Cinema ]]>https://bollyy.com/iffi-53-witnesses-masterclass-on-gender-participation-in-hindi-cinema/

Low Presence of women in creative decision making of films: Prof Lakshmi Lingam

Presence of women on movie sets automatically changes the behaviour of men: Pushan Kripalani

Bringing about gender rights has to do with carrying out conversations & putting out guidelines to follow: Rashmi Lamba

Representation is very important for power structures to change: Prof Shilpa Phadke

Posted On: 24 NOV 2022 7:42PM by PIB Mumbai

#IFFIWOOD, 24 November 2022

A Masterclass on Gender Participation in Hindi Cinema was held at the ongoing 53rd International Film Festival of India along with Tata Institute of Social Sciences today in Panaji, Goa wherein a presentation on “Breaking the Screen Ceiling: Gender and Work in Hindi Cinema” was held. Key insights from a quantitative research study on gender and work both on and off screen in Hindi cinema were presented during the masterclass. A total of 1930 characters from 35 films were analysed for their gender representation on screen, types of roles played by characters in various genders, their occupations and other parameters. The study also explored the most popular departments of film making for women crew members, the levels at which they work and the share of women winning film awards.

The panel comprised of Prof Lakshmi Lingam, Prof Shilpa Phadke and Ms. Rashmi Lamba from the TISS research team, National award winning film critic Ms. Meenakshi Shedde, and noted filmmaker Mr. Pushan Kripalani. The panellists shared their reflections on the topic ‘Gender Participation in Hindi Cinema’ and the findings of the study were shared and discussed. They panellists also deliberated on the steps that can be taken to productively respond to the lack of gender diversity within the Hindi cinema ecosystem and increase overall participation of women. Two short AVs/public service announcements, made by the students of TISS, were also screened and widely appreciated by the keen audience. One dealt with lack of bathroom facilities for women on the film sets and the other critiqued the beauty stereotypes perpetuated by cinema.

Prof Lakshmi Lingam, Dean of School for media and cultural studies while making her presentation stated that “Women are mostly present in the post production phase while their presence is comparatively low in creative decision making process. She highlighted the fact that the nation has had only 4 women Union Ministers of Information and Broadcasting in the last 75 years, only 4 female chairpersons of Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) in last 72 years and only 29% female board members in the last 13 years”. She further added that according to the study, professions of men and women are also stereotyped. She said “Purpose of the study is to initiate a conversation with the industry. A lot needs to be done to bring equality. Many films show that intimacy gets initiated only by men and it has no idea of consent, it shows illegal ways being used by actors to get consent which send the wrong message to society”. She further added that post ‘Nirbhaya’ lot of legislations have changed and a big shift has happened and films need to acknowledge these big shifts.

Mr. Pushan Kripalani, noted Director of film GoldFish, talked about the increasing percentage of women on his sets being a happy accident and how the presence of women on the sets has changed the behaviour of men in a positive way. He said “when we are communicating with the film crew we use a lot of words as punctuation and it has become the lexicon of communication. Swearing on the sets become part of the game and it shows camaraderie in a way but with women of the sets, this changes”. He also said they arranged creche for Kalki’s child. Talking about the misogyny in the industry, Mr. Kripalani remarked that “Every room I walked in as a cinematographer was drenched with misogyny and I didn’t want to be a part of it and that’s why I chose Independent cinema”.

Prof Shilpa Phadke, co-author of book ‘Why Loiter’ and co-director of the documentary film ‘Under the Open Sky’, highlighted the declining participation of women in workforce in spite of having high literacy rate. She said “Representation is very important for power structures to change. Just having them there will make a huge difference. Even in public space, women make other people more comfortable.”

Ms Rashmi Lamba, talked about the importance of providing woman role models in movies. She said “Why I volunteer with Geena Davis Institute is because I believe in her mantra that if you can see it, you can be it”. She said that she is truly inspired by that. The institute is studying gender equality and stereotyping of masculinity which also leads to stereotyping of women roles. Ms. Lamba further added that “In US, by using data, they have found that they have achieved gender neutrality with family films because people can identify with all the characters and our study will also help in making such changes in India”. She exhorted that “bringing about gender rights has to do with carrying out conversations and putting out guidelines to follow. Young professions should look at these concerns including cinematic language of the camera which is sexist”.

Ms. Meenakshi Shedde, who is winner of the national film award for Best Film Critic, talked about the actress assault case in Kerala. She mentioned that the Women in Cinema Collective (WCC) was spontaneously formed to support the survivor and fight for womens’ rights to a safe working environment in the film industry. But many in Kerala film bodies and mainstream Kerala film industry punished the WCC members by not giving them roles, isolating, shaming and trolling them.

I want everyone to know about Khudiram. Lesser known facts of freedom struggle shown in the film: Director Vidya Sagar Raju

Posted On: 22 NOV 2022 7:31PM by PIB Mumbai

#IFFIWood, 22 November 2022

A biopic in Telugu on Khudiram Bose, the young, iconic freedom fighter and one of the youngest martyrs of India’s freedom struggle has been screened under Indian Panorama section in 53rd IFFI, today.

The Director Vidya Sagar Raju chose to do a biopic when he donned the director’s hat for the third time, because as he said, “I want everyone to know about Khudiram”.

Addressing a press conference on the sidelines of IFFI, Director Vidya Sagar Raju said that he had to undertake intensive research before developing the script. Khudiram’s life and times was intertwined with important events and personalities of freedom movement, like Partition of Bengal and Rabindranath Tagore, Swami Vivekananda, Sister Nivedita, Barendranath Ghosh and others. Some lesser known facts about freedom struggle have also been shown in the film. Like six lawyers had fought the case for Khudiram. Narendra Kumar Basu, a reputed lawyer of the era had fought the case for Khudiram, though they could not win it. It has been shown that the first flag of India was designed by Sister Nivedita and that has a very crucial plot in the film. Another significant historical event, the first sound recording in the country which happened in 1906 in which Rabindranath Tagore had sung Vande was also showcased. .

“When our team went through Khudiram's history, we found there was a lot of things to show”, said Vidya Sagar Raju. “The script takes us through the horrors of Partition in Bengal, in which many historical characters are involved. I tried to make the biopic a little wider”.

The Director gives credit to the entire cast and crew for making the film come out well.. Senior technicians who have worked in it knew how to bring alive the script. “They are behind the film, but for me they are the foremost”, he said.

Debutant actor Rakesh Jagrlamudi, who played the title role, expressed happiness for being able to portray a freedom fighter in his first film. It was a little challenging for him to portray the historical real-life character, he revealed. But, the team’s support helped him to do it with ease, he added. Working with senior actors like Vivek Oberoi, Atul Kulkarni, Naseer and others was a rich learning experience for a debutant, said Rakesh

Fine-tuning, perfection, minute details, adopting the culture and characters are important elements of film-making, said Vidya Sagar Raju. Speaking on regional films, he said, “All emotions are same around the world. Hence, regional films also appeal to an international audience”.

The Director further said, when the country started observing 'Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav', we thought of making a film on our revered freedom fighters. “Then we started our travel with Khudiram”.

The film will be released in seven Indian lanuguages. The team is planning to screen the Hindi version during the upcoming winter session in Parliament, team Khudiram Bose stated.

Other films of Portuguese origin, delegates can enjoy at the 53rd edition of IFFI are Great Yarmouth (2022) directed by Marco Martins and Pacifiction (2022) directed by Albert Serra.

With a history going back all the way to 1896 and a host of totemic names in its cannon, the story of Portuguese cinema is one that interests all movie buffs. Six months after the Lumiere brothers made history, on 18 June 1896, at the Real Colyseu da Rua da Palma nº 288, in Lisbon cinema in Portugal was born. A Severa, the first entirely talking sound Portugese film, was created in 1931. Shortly Portugese Cinema would enter its Golden Age, which began in 1933 with A Canço de Lisboa, and would extend for the following 20 years, with movies like O Pátio das Cantigas (1942) and A Menina da Rádio (1944). Such was the dynamism of the Portugese cinema world that Manoel de Oliveira's debut feature, Aniki-Bóbó (1942), featured a kind of realist aesthetic that was a year ahead of the much celebrated Italian neorealism.

Get a glimpse of this celebrated legacy of Portuguese filmmaking at the 53rd edition of IFFI and experience the many stories that Portugal has to tell, through PalomaYarmouth and Pacifiction.

‘My tears and difficulties in the film are real’

‘Realistic films connect with the audience’

Posted On: 23 NOV 2022 2:56PM by PIB Mumbai

#IFFIWood, 23 November 2022

The Kashmir files helped people all over the world to be aware of the tragedy that happened to Kashmiri Pandits in 1990s, said Anupam Kher, lead actor in the movie. He was participating in IFFI Table Talks held in connection with the 53rd International Film Festival of India in Panaji, Goa .

“It is a film based on true incidents. Film Director Vivek Agnihotri interviewed around 500 people all around the world for the movie. On the night of 19th January 1990, 5 lakh Kashmiri Pandits had to leave their homes and memories in the Kashmir valley following rising violence. As a Kashmiri Hindu, I lived with the tragedy. But nobody was recognising the tragedy. World was trying to hide this tragedy. The film started a healing process by documenting the tragedy”, Anupam Kher added.

Reminiscing the process of giving life to a tragedy he suffered, Anupam Kher said that The Kashmir Files is not just a film to him, but an emotion which he portrayed on screen. “Since I represent the people who got expelled from their homes, I consider it a great responsibility to express it in the best possible manner. My tears, my difficulties which you are seeing in this film are all real,” he described.

Anupam Kher further said that in this film instead of using his craft as an actor, he used his soul to give expression to the truth behind real life incidents. He also highlighted that the main theme behind the movie is to never give up. “Hope is always around the corner”, he said.

Covid pandemic and ensuing lockdown has influenced the way in which people watch movies. Emphasising this fact further, Anupam Kher said that with the OTT platforms, audience have got into the habit of watching world cinema and multi lingual films. “The audience got a taste of realistic films. Those films which has an element of reality will surely connect with the audience. The success of films like Kashmir Files is a testament to it. Without any songs, any comedy, the film turned out still amazing. This is actually the triumph of cinema”, he added.

As a piece of advice to upcoming filmmakers, he said that one should remove the notion from their minds that they are from a particular language film industry. “Instead, the film makers must identify themselves as film makers from the Indian film industry doing a particular language film. It is a larger than life film industry”.

Recalling his journey with IFFI, Anupam Kher said that he first attended IFFI in 1985 as a 28 year old for his film Saaransh. “Since I played a 65 year old character in that movie, nobody recognised me at IFFI that time. 37 years later with over 532 films, it’s a great moment for me to be in Goa again for IFFI which has turned into an iconic festival and one of the best in the world”, he said.

At the interaction Anupam Kher also announced that he will produce the Odiya film Pratikshya – story of father-son duo with unemployment as a dominant theme - in Hindi, with him playing one of the main roles. Director of Prathikshya Anupam Patnaik was also sharing the dais at the interaction organised by PIB with media at the festival venue. Abhishek Agarwal, Producer of Kashmir Files who joined the conversation said that it was the film which chose him and not the other way around.

Synopsis

Krishna Pandit is a young Kashmiri Pandit refugee living with his grandfather who witnessed the 1990 genocide of Kashmiri Pandits and had to flee from Kashmir. Pushkarnath Pandit fought for the revocation of Article 370 all his life. Krishna believes his parents died in an accident in Kashmir. Krishna Pandit, a JNU student, under the influence of his mentor Professor Radhika Menon, refutes the genocide and fights for Azad Kashmir. But he discovers the truth only after his grandfather's death.

The Director Lars Knorrn was inspired by the devastating pandemic-induced fear and uncertainty to make this film. Distanz (Distance) has been screened under ‘Cinema of the World’ category in 53rd International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa. Addressing a press conference today, Director Lars Knorrn remarked "I tried to explore the human need to push forward amid the fear and change happening around us".

The film revolves around the life of Laszlo who isolates himself during the pandemic. The film was shot in the midst of the global pandemic induced lockdown inside a single apartment. The cast and crew had to follow all the social protocols and abide by the pandemic induced restrictions. “I wanted the film to look as realistic and authentic as possible to bring out the raw emotions. The actors had to shoot wearing masks at a time when my colleagues were shying away from shooting people in masks”.

However, it is not a film on the pandemic, clarified the Director. “The pandemic was not the problem itself, but it acted like a catalyst to bring forward all the problems we had within ourselves. While the character Laszlo is seen protecting himself, Zoe enters the apartment like a problem or virus and becomes a destructive force”, he said.

Lars Knorrn remarked, “The pandemic was a life changing moment for humanity. It is our duty to put this somewhere in the film. As a musician, photographer, writer or film maker, it felt like the pandemic cannot be ignored in one’s work”.

Lars Knorr also said, “I wanted to portray the apartment as a character, in which each room has its own sound and tonality”. Distanz also showcases a fear for change. “If you have to change, you have to let go of the fear”, said Lars Knorrn. He wanted to say the story of two people in one apartment. He also said that the film reflects the fact that “sometimes you have to destroy yourself in order to refine yourself”.

Producer Felix Leiberg called it a ‘time document’ which would not have been done without the lockdown. The film was shot and finished within the lockdown. “It’s a piece of time, a moment in history we wanted to capture in a creative way”, he stated. Speaking about the Indian society, he remarked, “The history and culture here is much more connecting, sharing, kind and loving”.

On being asked about the challenges of shooting the film amidst the pandemic, both the actors Hannah Ehrlichmann and Lucas Englander said that even though there was fear of getting infected, isolating and living in the bubble with the crew made them feel safe. Hannah further said that getting into her character made her explore a rougher side of herself.

Hannah Ehrlichmann also said, “Part of the film shows the German way of being afraid of your emotions and talking about your emotions”. Actor Lucas Englander described the film as “a document of time where we were going through a transition and started speaking about our issues and psychological problems and that we did not know how to be ourselves”.

The film describes the urge for liberation from the constantly growing social restrictions and complexity. "Distanz" is a reflection of our society today. Laszlo and Zoe negotiate in their most pure human form the consequences of loss, stress, ego, fear, sex and love. Distanz was written during the lock-down, shot in just one apartment and produced completely independently. A modern drama that delves deep into the human soul and addresses questions of identity and the patterns of life.

“This moment is big for us, bigger for the people of Odisha.”- Anupam Patnaik

#IFFIWood, 23 November 2022

The making of the film Pratikshya could have been a film in itself. From writing about a father-son story, to losing his own father during the early stages of this film, then deciding against making the film, to finally being convinced by his family to make it, and now screening at IFFI, 2022, Anupam Patnaik’s Pratikshya has had its own journey.

Inspired by a short story by writer Gourahari Das, it is the story of Sanjay, a boy from a middle class family who is on the lookout for a government job, a few months before his father retires. His father, Bipin, is insistent that he find a job, as the family has debts, and Bipin is also diagnosed with a terminal illness. Sanjay learns about the Government’s scheme of compassionate appointment where a family member gets the job of the deceased government employee. A frustrated Sanjay waits for his father’s death only to realise his disturbing mind. It is a film about family, especially about the complex relationships fathers and sons have.

Dipanwit Dashamohapatra, who plays Sanjay, spoke about the honour of having their film screened at IFFI and said, “This is a big moment for me as it is my first film as a lead actor, but for the people of Odisha it is an even bigger deal as the Odia film industry has been struggling for some time.” Anupam Patnaik, the director, spoke of the Odia film industry, and said, “Before the 1999 cyclone, there were 160 theatres in Odisha, after the cyclone there were 100, and after Covid, only 60 remain, how an industry to function on 60 theatres is?”

Anupam Patnaik also spoke about his father’s first film which won a National Award, and his first film as a director is being screened at IFFI. It was a special moment for him, and a way to honour his late father. For both Director and Actor, a huge moment was when Anupam Kher, sharing the dais with them announced spontaneously that he will make Pratikshya in Hindi, where he will be playing the role of the father. He gave Patnaik a token signing amount for the rights of the film. It was a moment straight out of the movies, befitting that it happened at IFFI, a platform that celebrates the magic of the movies.

Greatest evergreen trend in animation filmmaking is emotional storytelling: Kung Fu Panda creator Mark Osborne at IFFI 53 Master Class

‘Animation projects can’t be finalised in script form as it always evolve’

#IFFIWood, 22 November 2022

Though the streaming platforms are a boon for animation films, the greatest evergreen trend in animation film making is emotional storytelling, said Mark Osborne, American filmmaker and animator famous for his films like Kung Fu Panda and The Little Prince. He was leading a Master Class session on the topic ‘Animation as a Tool for Expression’ on the sidelines of 53rd International Film Festival of India.

“With the emergence of OTT platforms, creating content for a global audience is going to be the norm. But at the end of the day, the film needs to connect with the people and touch their hearts``, he added. He further said that for creating such type of content, it's really important to find out what is meaningful to you. “If it is important to you and you are honest about it, you will find your audience. Honesty creates a fresh approach,” he elucidated.

Emphasising on the power of Animation, Mark said that animation is a diverse and vast medium that can tell any story. Digging deep he said, “To make somebody feel about something that doesn’t even exist, is really magnificent. It is the result of a continuous process of rewriting, rebuilding and experimentation. We feel the magic of animation when you see it come to life eventually.”

Mark Osborne also opined that one cannot finalise an animation project in script form. “As far as animation is concerned, the script is not locked. There is always scope for improvisation right to the last moment. It is going to evolve and change. Being a visual medium, we need to allow the visual medium to do a lot of work on the project”, he explained.

Responding to queries, the master animator said that every animator needs a support system to bring out the stories within them. “Supporting the artists and creators can help miracles happen. A safe space is needed for the artists to create animation”, he asserted.

On a cautious note to aspiring animation makers, Mark said that though it is important to draw inspiration from masters, care should be taken to not imitate their work. “You have to find a balance by exploring your own ideas. Every person will have a different perspective and life experience. Bringing this personal journey and experience into filmmaking is paramount. Mark Osborne also gave a detailed presentation of his journey in creating the movie The Little Prince by adapting the novel written by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. The session was moderated by Prosenjit Ganguly.

The Masterclasses and In-Conversation sessions are being organised jointly by Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI), NFDC, Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) and ESG. A total of 23 sessions comprising masterclasses and in-conversations are being conducted this year to encourage the students and enthusiasts of cinema in every aspect of filmmaking.
