Abhilash Chaudhary on 'Sikandar': In the highly anticipated action-thriller Sikandar, directed by A.R. Murugadoss and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala, Abhilash Chaudhary will be playing a pivotal role. Recently, Mayapuri’s journalist Shilpa Patil met Abhilash for an interview, where he talked about working with Salman Khan, his character in the film, and his journey in the industry.
Here’s what Abhilash Chaudhary had to say.
You’ve entertained audiences with several characters on television and OTT, and now you’re bringing your special project Sikandar. How do you look at your journey so far?
It has truly been an amazing journey. I believe that you cannot appreciate any journey fully unless it has its share of struggles. My journey began without a film background and without any formal acting courses. I started with a cameo on television and learned a lot from that experience. It was my film school. That’s where I picked things up, learned, and kept progressing.
You started with television. Did you always think that you would be doing television shows? You did very few shows and then shifted to Bollywood and OTT. What were your thoughts at that time?
It wasn’t that I consciously shifted. When I came to Mumbai, I only knew that I wanted to act, and I had this belief that I could do it. With that mindset, I moved forward. At first, I didn’t even know where auditions were held or that TV auditions were different from film auditions. I had no idea about any of this.
Once I understood how things worked, I started giving auditions. After two years of auditions, I met Mukesh Chhabra, and he told me that if I wanted to work in films, I needed to increase my approach. I did exactly that, and then I got my first film, Tubelight, in a cameo role. So, it’s not that I shifted; I was just unaware of the whole process. Once you learn about these things, progress happens.
You mentioned Tubelight, where you worked with Salman Khan. But in Sikandar, you’re working with him in a completely different way. Would you say this is a different experience?
Absolutely! In Tubelight, I had a cameo, and all my scenes were with Sohail Khan. I didn’t have any scenes with Salman sir, so I didn’t get the chance to work with him directly. However, I did meet him on set, but I didn’t have a personal interaction with him. That’s when I decided I wanted to work with him. I’ve always been a fan of his.
You also had a cameo in Dabangg 3. Can you tell us more about that experience?
Yes, I had a scene with Salman sir, but it was also a cameo. The real thrill comes when you play a substantial role. I’ve always felt that if I ever get the opportunity to do a solid role with him, it would be an amazing experience.
After having cameo roles in two films, you finally got the chance to work with Salman Khan in Sikandar. But the role you play in this film is quite different. What do you have to say about that?
This is a big shift. In Sikandar, I play a supporting role to Salman sir, and it’s a positive character, which is very different from what I’ve done before.
When you learned that your character was positive, how did it feel for you?
When I got the call from Mukesh Chhabra for this role, I was excited because I would get the chance to work with Salman sir. Also, it had been a while since I’d worked with a good actor, and I was thrilled about that. The positivity of the character was like a bonus. If you look at my previous roles, starting from 2021 until now, all my characters were negative. So, knowing this one was positive just added to my excitement.
What was your reaction when you got the offer for this film?
Honestly, when you work with a director, you just want to work. But as an actor, it’s important to take your craft to the next level. If you want to improve in this profession, it’s crucial to understand your character, your screen presence, and its importance. I never thought of turning down a role just because I was working with Salman sir. But yes, understanding the character and its significance was essential to me.
How are you entertaining your fans with your character in Sikandar?
This time, I will be seen playing a fresh character, which is quite different from anything I’ve done before. I’m sure my fans will enjoy this new side of me.
What was your experience on set? You’ve mentioned that you learned a lot from megastar Salman Khan. Could you share more on that?
Salman sir didn’t earn the title of “megastar” for no reason. It’s the result of years of hard work. On set, I learned a lot from him, whether it was about acting or his interactions with others. He’s so natural and involved in his scenes that you forget you’re shooting.
You must have created many special memories during the shoot. Would you like to share some with us?
I have many fond memories with him. We played cricket on set, worked out together in his gym, and there were many beautiful moments that we’ll always remember.
In this film, you also share screen space with Sharman Joshi. What was your experience working with him?
Sharman Joshi is a wonderful person. On set, we were like a family—laughing, chatting, and even having meals together. When we weren’t shooting, we’d share our stories. It was a very sweet, brotherly atmosphere.
Can you share any upcoming projects with us?
I’ll soon be seen in a web series with Ram Gopal Varma, where I’ll be playing a cop. After that, I have a theater release film lined up.
Salman Khan is known for delivering iconic dialogues in his films. Do you have a favorite?
Yes, my favorite dialogue is from his film Wanted: “Ek baar jo maine commitment kar di, uske baad main apne aap ki bhi nahi sunta.” That’s my all-time favorite.
What message would you like to give to your audience?
I would just like to say that I hope you continue to shower me with the same love as you always have, and please do watch my upcoming film Sikandar on March 30th.
Abhilash Chaudhary has also worked in Dabangg 3 and Tubelight alongside Salman Khan. His much-awaited film Sikandar will be released on March 30th.
