After the popular TV show Tenali Rama ran successfully for three years, it is making a grand return. This time, Aditya Redij takes on the iconic role of Maharaja Krishnadevaraya. MayaPuri"s journalist Shilpa Patil caught up with Aditya to discuss the show"s new concept, his look, and the reasons behind his decision to take on this role. Here"s what Aditya had to say in this insightful interview. Aditya, we"ve seen you as Puru in Porus. It"s been 7 years since you played such a royal character. How exciting is this for you? My experience with Porus was fantastic. Once again, I had to portray a king, and I had almost given up on playing such a role. But when I wore the heavy costume, the jewelry, and the turban, I felt like I had conquered the world. Honestly, I"m really excited. Maharaja Krishnadevaraya is such a renowned historical figure, and the character is deeply significant. Even Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was inspired by him. He"s mentioned in the Baburnama too. Krishnadevaraya was a great ruler, and playing this role isn"t just an exciting opportunity, it feels like a true blessing. Earlier, this role was portrayed by Manav. When you were approached for this role, did you watch the previous show or did you just focus on your own portrayal? I didn"t watch the previous Tenali Rama show (2017-2020). Manav"s performance was excellent, and the audience loved it. But I believe every actor brings their own perspective to a role, and I am bringing my own approach to the character. While I respect what Manav did, I am not trying to erase the essence of the character. I will interpret and present the role in my own way. There"s a lot to compare between the first and second season. How do you view these differences, especially considering the many changes between the two? Comparison is inevitable. When people find out that a new actor is playing a role they are deeply attached to, they want the original version back. They may say, "He was great!" But I would suggest approaching the show with an open mind. To enjoy something in its true essence, sometimes you need to let go of the past and embrace the new. Whatever has happened is fine, but now it's time to accept this new portrayal. I"m sure when people watch this new season with an open heart, they will appreciate my take on the character. Historical shows like this can be tough, especially with costumes and jewelry. Do you find it difficult to carry all the weight? It"s definitely challenging! Wearing a 20-kilogram costume, along with heavy jewelry, a turban, and holding a sword, is not easy. But once we are on set and the director says, “Roll, Camera, Action,” all the discomfort fades away. At that moment, I forget everything and focus solely on the performance. This is just part of the job, just like any other profession. I hope people enjoy my work so that I can keep doing this for years to come. There are many TV shows today. How tough is it to maintain the popularity of a show? What are your thoughts on this show, and what are your expectations for the audience? Why do you think they want to watch it at the same time as before? From 2017 to 2020, Tenali Rama became an essential part of the viewers' routine. Their evening schedule was designed around watching it. That"s why Sony SAB is bringing it back at the same time, 8 PM, so everyone can watch it together. I think this is one of the reasons people are excited—it"s like a tradition they want to continue. You mentioned the show is humorous but also has a lot of wisdom. What do you think makes this show special, and why did you decide to be a part of it? My reason is simple: I had the opportunity to work with such a great production house once again. Abhimanyu creates amazing content, and he has produced fantastic shows in the past. Being a part of this show is like a blessing, and it"s an opportunity no one would pass up. That"s why I decided to join the team. What would you like to say to your audience? I would say to the audience, "Watch the show with an open heart." Tenali Rama is returning on December 16th, Monday to Saturday, at 8 PM. Aditya Redij has been a well-known face on Indian television for many years.
