On Thursday, a press conference was held for Payal Kapadia's award-winning film, "All We Imagine as Light," which recently won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival. At this event, producer Payal Kapadia announced that the film will be released in theaters across India on November 22. Joining her was Rana Daggubati, owner of Spirit Media, who discussed the film’s production and answered questions from the media.

This film is notable as it marks the first Indian film to receive the Grand Prix award, creating history in the realm of Indian cinema. Distributed in India by Spirit Media, the film has garnered significant international attention.

"All We Imagine as Light" is a Malayalam-Hindi feature that follows the story of a nurse named Prabha, who receives an unexpected gift from her long-estranged husband that transforms her life. Meanwhile, her roommate, Anu, is on a quest to find a private living space in the city for her and her boyfriend. One day, the two nurses, accompanied by their friend Parvati, embark on a road trip to a coastal town where a mysterious forest serves as a backdrop for their dreams to unfold.

The film stars Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, and Chhaya Kadam and is a collaborative Indo-French production between France's Petit Chaos and India’s Chalk and Cheese and Another Birth.

At the press conference, Payal Kapadia stated, "Creating this film took several years, and I am thrilled to partner with Spirit Media. This is my first film being released in theaters, allowing Indian audiences to finally experience it on the big screen, where cinema truly comes alive."

Rana Daggubati expressed his enthusiasm, saying, "We are excited to bring this remarkable film to Indian theaters. At Spirit Media, we are committed to delivering unique and meaningful stories to audiences nationwide. Payal has crafted a beautiful film, and we can’t wait to share it."

What motivated you as a woman to create this film?  

Payal Kapadia explained that the film focuses on friendship, highlighting the strong bonds formed among characters in Mumbai. People from different backgrounds come together to build their lives, and the relationships they forge become their new family, which was a crucial element in her storytelling.

What are your plans for future films?

Payal revealed her strong interest in continuing to explore Mumbai, indicating that she plans to make at least two more films set in the city.

Given your distinct filmmaking style, would you consider casting Rana Daggubati in your projects?

Payal responded positively, stating, "If Rana is interested in being part of a film like mine, I would be delighted."

With so few female filmmakers creating independently, do you think you can instigate change in the industry?

Payal acknowledged the contributions of many women who have come before her in independent filmmaking. "I am just one part of this larger movement," she said.

How do you define an Indian film?

Payal remarked that there isn't a single definition for what constitutes an Indian film. However, she believes that any film made by an Indian can be considered an Indian film.

If a biopic of your life were made, what title would you choose?

Rana humorously suggested asking him that question in 20 years, noting that he still has much to accomplish.

Speaking about "Lapata Ladies," Payal expressed her admiration: "It's a fantastic film, and I’m really happy for its success. We all enjoyed it and appreciated it. Kiran Rao’s previous films are also ones I’ve liked."

"All We Imagine as Light" will be released in major Indian cities, including Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, and Kolkata. The film has also recently premiered in France and Italy and is set to release in UK and US theaters next month.
