Actress Anjali Anand, known for her remarkable performance in the web series Dabba Cartel under the banner of Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani’s Excel Entertainment, has once again proved her immense talent. The series, which has already garnered much appreciation, showcases her powerful acting and has made a lasting impact. Recently, Anjali shared her journey and struggles in an exclusive interview. Let’s dive into what she had to say.

Anjali Anand Shines in Farhan Akhtar’s Dabba Cartel

Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani’s Dabba Cartel has earned rave reviews. The show has been praised for its unique concept, and Anjali Anand's performance has caught the attention of audiences. In this interview, Anjali opens up about her role in the series, her experiences, and what’s next for her in the industry.

You recently made a huge impact with Dabba Cartel. Even after the show’s release, you’re receiving amazing feedback and comments. Your portrayal of the character has been especially appreciated, and there are even suggestions that you should continue to take on similar roles. How do you feel about this? What kind of reactions have you received?

I’ve received some really positive feedback, and what’s interesting is that the reactions have been quite diverse. People from all age groups have watched the show—families, couples, and even parents with children. I think that’s the biggest victory for the show. Wherever I go, everyone talks about Dabba Cartel. It’s been so overwhelming to see how much people appreciate the series.

When you were offered the script for Dabba Cartel, what was your first reaction?

I didn’t get a chance to read the script initially. By the time I was offered the show, the shooting had already begun, and I was cast at the last minute. Shibani (Shibani Dandekar) had seen me in Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani and thought I would be perfect for the role of Shahida. I didn’t even get the time to read the script before joining the set. I started going through the script from the fifth episode onwards, but as I settled into the role, Shahida's character really came to life on its own.

Anjali Anand shines in Dabba Cartel, holding her own amongst powerhouse performers

The concept of Dabba Cartel, where drugs are trafficked inside boxes, is very unique. What did you think of it?

I think the "dabba system" is something that has always existed in India. The idea of selling illegal goods in boxes is quite genius, and it has never failed here. It’s been an innovative approach. Some people even joked, asking if I was giving out ideas for the show! But it’s certainly a concept that stands out.

There’s a moment in the show where one character says, “Let’s wrap eight packets,” and you reply, “No, no, make it ten.” Can you recall that scene and share your thoughts on it?

You’ll see in the show that the chemistry between the five of us was fantastic. We were all enjoying working together, and it didn’t feel like we were putting in so much effort. After a while, we completely immersed ourselves in our characters. We were living our roles and having fun with it. I think the audience can feel that camaraderie.

The concept of drugs in Dabba Cartel has been compared to Breaking Bad. What do you think about that comparison?

People often draw comparisons, but I don’t think every show about drugs is the same. Dabba Cartel is entirely different from Breaking Bad. The way drugs are sold and the events unfold in our show are unique. Breaking Bad is an amazing show, but here in India, we have five women who are taking the lead in the drug trade, and I’m thrilled to be part of such a story.

Does screen time matter to you?

Not at all. I’m currently working on a project where I only have two scenes, and I’m perfectly fine with that. The key is to enjoy the work you do. If that work provides for you, then there’s no problem with the screen time.

In a previous interview, you mentioned that if a story interests you, even if the pay is less, you’ll do it, but if the pay is high, you might do it even if the story isn’t great. Could you elaborate on that?

Yes, there are times when the pay may not be great, but the story is so compelling that I can’t pass it up. I believe that someday, that story will matter. Even if the pay is higher and the story is not that strong, I might still take it because I feel that it could lead to something meaningful in the future.

How do you choose your scripts?

I rely a lot on my instincts. The moment I hear a script, I get an internal feeling about it. I trust that feeling because it always guides me in the right direction.

Have you ever faced challenges because of your weight?

No, I haven’t faced any such challenges. People may have said things about my weight, but I’ve done everything—from reality TV to movies and web shows. I’ve worked in commercial films too, and I’ve proved that I can do it all.

You’ve worked in TV shows, reality shows, and now stepping into films. What do you enjoy the most?

I absolutely love being on set. I want my entire calendar to be filled with work. I enjoy working on diverse projects, whether it’s for good pay, great content, or meeting amazing people.

Your journey began with the TV serial Dhai Kilo Prem. Can you tell us about that?

It’s a fun story! I was having a meal at a restaurant when the makers of Dhai Kilo Prem noticed me and approached me for the show. I believe whatever is meant for you will find its way to you. That’s how it happened for me. The same happened with Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani—someone suggested my name for the role.

If we ask you about your beliefs, what do you prioritize more: karma or religion?

I prioritize karma because being kind to others is more important than anything else. If you speak to someone with love, they’ll always remember you. I also believe that religion is about karma and love.

What does spirituality mean to you?

For me, spirituality is about being aware of your own self. It’s not about looking outside, but about understanding what’s within you. Spirituality is very personal, and everyone has their own way of achieving peace. I don’t follow any particular path because everyone has their unique way of living in peace.

If you had to work in another genre, what would it be?

I would love to do a full drama. But my next project is a comedy, and I’m really looking forward to it!

Is there a specific director or actor you would like to work with?

I’d love to work with anyone who brings good scripts and quality work. But if I had to name one, I’d say I’d love to work with Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

Any message for your lovely audience and fans?

After an 8-year-long career, I’m happy that people have finally come to know me. I’m glad that new audiences have connected with me. Keep watching, keep connecting. We’re putting our hearts into our work, and I hope you’ll watch it with the same passion.
