Dupahiya Earns Praise, Makers Announce Season 2
‘Dupahiya’ (Dupahiya) has been receiving immense praise from viewers ever since its release on Amazon Prime Video. The series has not only garnered popularity but is also being widely talked about. Recently, the makers of the series announced the second part of the show. Avinash Dwivedi, who was primarily known as an actor, co-wrote the series alongside Chirag Garg. In this interview, Avinash discusses the series’ story, the inspiration behind it, the societal issues it addresses, and the cast involved. Let’s take a look at what he had to say.
-
Your series ‘Dupahiya’ has been receiving a lot of love. What do you have to say about that?
It has been an amazing experience. People are recommending the series to each other, and we’re receiving great feedback on social media. People are writing long posts, and it fills me with so much happiness. One thing that I particularly liked was that my parents, who live in another city, used to ask me what they should watch on OTT platforms. When ‘Dupahiya’ released, they told me that it was something they could watch with the whole family. Hearing that made me really happy.
-
How did the journey of ‘Dupahiya’ begin? What was going through your mind while creating the show?
‘Dupahiya’ began five years ago when my writing partner Chirag Garg and I decided to create it. Both of us wanted to write a story that came from the heart and connected with the rural life of India. We wanted to make a series that had comedy while also delivering an important societal message. We started working on it in 2020, and now, it's out there for everyone to enjoy.
-
Why did you choose this particular story, and what message do you want to convey through it?
This story is something we’ve witnessed firsthand. I am from Uttar Pradesh, and in our village and family, we’ve seen dowry being demanded or even linked to a person’s education. In some cases, there’s even a “rate list” for the groom. Through this story, we aim to address the issue of dowry in society. I would also like to say that it’s wrong to both demand and give dowry. Additionally, many women expect their husbands to take them on vacations or buy them gifts, and that too, to some extent, is wrong. If you ask for something, the other side will also ask for something in return.
-
Why did you choose to play the character ‘Kuber’? What made you select this particular role, even when you had the freedom to choose any character?
There were two main reasons behind choosing the character of Kuber. Firstly, I had witnessed something similar when one of my brothers, after his marriage, became so attached to his bike that he distanced himself from the family. Secondly, I knew Kuber would be a gray character, one that people might dislike, but would be fun to watch. Such characters are rare, and I found it fascinating. Also, I should mention that I auditioned for this role, even though I was the one who wrote the series.
-
It’s interesting that you auditioned for a role in your own story. How was that experience, and who did you audition for?
Until now, all the auditions I’ve given were through casting directors, but this time, I had written the scene myself. Initially, I thought it would be easy since I had written it, but the reality was that I couldn’t detach myself from the perspective of a writer. I kept questioning, “Why did I write this?” It took me some time to realize that I had to look at it from an actor's point of view, not a writer's. Once I made that shift, I recorded the audition and sent it to the producers.
-
As a writer and an actor, how difficult or easy is it to act in a show that you’ve written?
I initially thought it would be easy, but I soon realized that it wasn’t. The biggest advantage is that you can view the script from both the writer’s and the actor’s perspectives. However, when you're thinking as the writer, it becomes difficult to act because you're always thinking, “I wrote this.” On the other hand, when you're working with someone else's script, you quickly understand why the writer wrote it and what their perspective was.
-
How did Gajraj Rao come on board for ‘Dupahiya’? Why did you choose him, and what was your experience working with him?
When we wrote the story, we had already decided that we would cast Gajraj Rao for the role. But, of course, everything depends on the script. When we sent the script to him, he really liked it and agreed to play the role. Working with him was an incredible experience. He interacts with people based on their age, which is a rare quality. We learned a lot from him, and I think everyone on the set must have learned something too, because he has a unique way of making his performances truly impactful.
-
How did you come to cast Sparsh Shrivastava, known for ‘Lapata Ladies’, in a different role as ‘Bhogol Jha’? How was your experience working with him?
Sparsh did an amazing job with his character ‘Bhogol’. Our biggest challenge was casting the right actor for the role of Bhogol because it was a very complex character to portray, and finding an actor of the right age group for the role was difficult. But Sparsh gave an excellent audition and did an outstanding job. I learned a lot from him, and I believe everyone on set also learned something from him because when he does something, it becomes impactful.
-
In the era of glamorous action films, was there any pressure to create a family-oriented, rural-based story like ‘Dupahiya’?
No, there was no pressure at all. This story came from our hearts because it is based on our own life experiences. Writers write about what they have experienced or read about. That’s why it’s often said that writers should read a lot because the more literature you read, the more perspectives you gain. There was no external pressure or direction; this was something we wanted to write from our hearts. We enjoyed writing every scene and building every character. It was all based on our preferences and passion.
-
How do you view other series based on Uttar Pradesh, like Mirzapur, Paatal Lok, Lapata Ladies, Panchayat, Gullak, and Dupahiya? Some are action-packed with violence and cursing, while others are simpler, family-oriented stories. Which style do you prefer?
Both styles are unique. One style is intense, with violence and adult content, while the other is a pure family drama. Both are set in Uttar Pradesh, but their approaches to storytelling and engaging the audience are very different. I enjoy both types because each has its own appeal. Mirzapur and Panchayat have both been loved by audiences, and each style has its own strength.
-
What are your upcoming projects?
The second part of ‘Dupahiya’ has already been announced. Additionally, I am working on a web series titled ‘Mandla Murders’, which will be streaming on Netflix, and I am also the writer for it. After that, our film ‘Nausikhye’ will also be released.
-
For those who haven't seen ‘Dupahiya’ yet, what would you say to them?
For those who have already watched ‘Dupahiya’, I want to thank them for their love and support. The biggest reason it has been so well-received is that people have genuinely enjoyed it and perhaps seen something they have been waiting to watch. For those who haven’t seen it yet, I hope they enjoy it just as much. Also, for content creators and actors, it’s a great motivation to continue creating such content.
‘Dupahiya’ features an ensemble cast including Avinash Dwivedi, Gajraj Rao, Renuka Shahane, Bhuvan Arora, Sparsh Shrivastava, Shivani Raghuwanshi, and Yashpal Sharma.
In addition to his acting career, Avinash has appeared in more than a dozen TV commercials, including those for Quikr, Tata Sky, Aqualite Footwear, Videocon D2H, and Mahindra. He also played a key role in the Yatra.com TVC.
