Imtiaz Ali, the acclaimed filmmaker and screenwriter behind hits like ‘Love Aaj Kal’, ‘Rockstar’, ‘Highway’, and ‘Tamasha’, recently graced the stage at Celebrating Cinema 2024 for his upcoming film ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’. He shared his insights on various topics, including Whistling Woods, Subhash Ghai’s films, VR studios, storytelling, the current landscape of cinema, and OTT platforms. Let’s dive into what he had to say.

Thoughts on the Student Crowd

When I visit Whistling Woods, I’m always amazed at how the space has filled with so many students. As A.R. Rahman says, "Bees only go where there is honey." Clearly, students find something valuable at Whistling Woods, which is why they come in such large numbers. Every time I meet Subhash Ghai, I also feel like I’m learning something new from him.

Impressions of the New VR Studio

I’ve seen the new VR studio here, and I plan to come back to learn about this technology from Meghna and her team to create a film. Whistling Woods is embracing new innovations, and I take pride in that. Many in the film industry aren’t formally educated in this field, but it’s heartening to see educated individuals making strides here. Kudos to Meghna and Subhash Ghai for their great work!

Current State of Hindi Cinema

Hindi cinema is currently at a remarkable juncture. We’re in a phase where no one really knows which film will succeed and which won’t. Every filmmaker is putting in their best efforts and resources to create entertaining films. Old films that no longer resonate with audiences are no longer embraced by today’s filmmakers. This is an excellent opportunity to tell contemporary stories. It’s a fascinating time where films we expect to succeed often do not, while those we don’t have high hopes for end up becoming hits.

Remaking Subhash Ghai's Films

I once discussed with Subhash Ghai about my idea for Highway, and he mentioned that it bore similarities to his film Hero. I admitted it did, as I’m a fan of his work, so it’s natural for influences to appear in my films. However, I wouldn’t want to remake any of his films. That said, many of my films will undoubtedly reflect his influence, and there’s nothing wrong with that. We learn a lot from childhood stories.

OTT Platforms and Cinema Culture

I believe OTT platforms are supporting cinema culture. If my film can be showcased in four different venues, that’s fantastic. OTT offers another platform for filmmakers to present their work, which I welcome. It allows more artists to emerge and share their talents.

Differences Between OTT and Traditional Cinema

One major shift in mainstream cinema has been the dominance of the business aspect over creativity. However, OTT has changed that dynamic.

Developing a Film's Story
I don’t use any specific technique when working on a story. The narrative that runs through your mind gradually evolves into a film. You don’t decide which story to tell; the story chooses you. For instance, you might be on a bus or train, or engaged in a conversation, and something resonates with you, ultimately forming the basis of your film.

I also want to mention that the method of showing film clips and discussing scenes with students is very effective. It transforms the interaction into something more engaging than just an interview.

Experience with Influential Guests
Meghna: The experience here is wonderful. Many talented people come and interact with our students. What I find particularly special is that this event caters to all ages. When we watch a film, we often don’t realize the hard work behind it. But when we talk to everyone here, we get a sense of the dedication that goes into making a film. I’m grateful to everyone who has come over the past three days.

Yashika: This is my first time here, and I’ve heard so much about it. Seeing so many students and how they learn through clips is really impressive.

Imtiaz Ali, known for his romantic narratives, is set to release another love story featuring Fahadh Faasil in 2025.
