Soon, the powerhouse actors of Indian cinema—Sunny Deol, Randeep Hooda, and Vineet Kumar Singh—will be seen in their new film 'Jaat.' In this film, Sunny will once again showcase his iconic ‘Angry Young Man’ persona, while Randeep will return as a villain, challenging the hero. Vineet, known for his stellar performance in Chhawa, will portray a negative role in this film. Recently, Mayapuri's journalist Shilpa Patil had an exclusive conversation with the star cast of 'Jaat'—Sunny Deol, Randeep Hooda, and Vineet Kumar Singh. During the interview, Shilpa asked them several questions about the film, and here's what they had to say.

After watching the trailer of 'Jaat', we all have high expectations from your characters and your performances. How do you feel knowing that these expectations have only increased after seeing the trailer?

Sunny Deol, Randeep Hooda, and Vineet Kumar Singh

Sunny Deol: When the audience comes with expectations, we try our best to meet them. I never work under pressure because I believe that working under pressure doesn’t bring out the best results. I did this film because I liked the script, and the response to the trailer has been great. We are confident that the audience will enjoy the film.

Randeep Hooda: This is a mass entertainer with a very entertaining story. Everyone involved, from the producers to the directors, has worked hard on this film. Also, when Sunny Paaji is involved, the film becomes special by itself. And in this film, Sunny Paaji's role has gone from a 2.5 kg hand to a 5 kg one!

Vineet Kumar Singh: It's great to be expected, and when someone expects something from you, it's a big deal. In our house, the person who works hard gets noticed. I have given my best performance as an actor in this film, and after the film was completed, I can say that it’s turned out great and will entertain people at all levels.

In the film, there's a dialogue, "The power of this 2.5 kg hand has been felt across the North; now it's time for the South." How did this dialogue come about? What’s the story behind it?

Sunny Deol: This dialogue has now become a story of its own. When I got this sequence, I understood its significance at the moment, which is why I decided to do it in this way. As you can see in the trailer, it looks really good.

In 'Jaat', we will see a fight between the hero and the villain, 'Rantunga.' What can we expect from this face-off?

Jaat star cast Interview-Randeep Hooda

Randeep Hooda: To make a hero look bigger, the villain needs to be equally strong. In the past, a lot of focus was given to the villain. The clash between the hero and the villain is what excites the audience, and you’ll find that in this film as well. In this film, we have a strong villain and an intense showdown, just like Lord Ram’s battle to save Lanka from Ravana.

Sunny Deol: When I heard the story of the film, I liked it a lot. Also, I loved the concept of "Sorry Bol." This film is not a remake but an original, and I believe it’s a film we can call a Hindi or pan-India movie. We hope we don't disappoint the audience.

We’ve seen you in action-packed roles before, whether in Ghayal or Ghatak. We’ve seen you uproot a hand pump, and now we’ll see you uproot a fan. What do you have to say about that?

Sunny Deol: Some characters appeal to us, and I remember when I was young, I would watch Dara Singh’s films and sit on a chair pretending to wrestle because I felt his power. That’s the fun of cinema—when you connect with the characters. When your hero does something heroic, it feels good, and watching it in a theater is even more thrilling.

You’ve played a wide range of roles in your career. What do you think about these roles?

Randeep Hooda: I consider myself lucky to have had the chance to play diverse characters. Preparing for characters like Sarabjit Singh and Veer Savarkar was very different and involved a lot of details. This film is a big commercial movie, so the preparation was more about makeup, and the persona they created is really attractive to the audience. Also, the director had already designed the character, so all I had to do was fit into it.

In this film, we are seeing a completely different avatar of you, even in terms of your look. What do you have to say about this?

Jaat star cast Interview-Vineet Kumar Singh

Vineet Kumar Singh: The credit for this goes to Sunny Sir. When he signed the film, I immediately said yes. Until then, I had never played a negative role, but this time, I was excited. The second credit goes to our director, Gopichand, who had seen Mukkabaaz and got the idea for this character. He had a completely different persona in mind for me, and I think that's why this film stands out. When a director trusts you, something special comes out of it, even things we might not know about ourselves.

This is an action-packed film, but the technology and safety around stunts have changed over the years. How has this shift in technology affected the action scenes?

Sunny Deol: I believe that South Indian cinema is currently ahead of Hindi cinema, especially in terms of action and technology. They know exactly why a shot is taken and what magic it will create. When we were shooting in the past, there was little focus on technology and safety, and we often got hurt. We didn’t know much about these things back then. But today, there’s a lot of safety, which is essential because we are humans and prone to injuries. Stunts have become safer and easier to perform now.

What was it like working with Sunny Deol Sir?

Randeep Hooda: Initially, there was a bit of hesitation because we mostly saw him on screen, but when we met him, he turned out to be completely different. He’s tough on the outside but soft inside. In the beginning, I felt a little awkward, but then he told me, "You’re an actor; forget everything and play your character." That was very encouraging, and because of him, everything became easier. We’ve learned a lot from him, and now we share a friendship, and I’m really happy about it.

Vineet Kumar Singh: Working with Sunny Sir was like a fanboy moment. There was a bit of hesitation, but the great thing about him is that he never made us feel that he is 'Sunny Deol.' He’s soft-spoken and a gentleman. His power is visible on camera, but when we were working together, I always felt safe. Even while doing action scenes, I knew that if I made a mistake, he would handle it. He has complete control.

The current cinema era is different. People appreciate the hard work and talent of actors today. What are your thoughts on this?

Sunny Deol: I think it’s a great time for talent to emerge. This is the right time, and it should always be this way. My hope is that only talent shines through because it is an art form, and art should never be suppressed. People should come forward and showcase their talent, and I’m very happy for this time.

Randeep Hooda: I think it’s a good time. Artists like Mukri and Asrani now have more opportunities, not just in cinema but also in OTT platforms. Cinema, sensibility, and TV formats have become a great bridge. There are also new opportunities for casting directors, managers, and teams who are making many things easier. Social media has also changed a lot, providing more opportunities for talent.

Vineet Kumar Singh: I believe this is the time when many actors, technicians, writers, and directors who weren’t getting work in the past 7-8 years are now busy and working. There’s been a sudden surge in demand, and while it feels like a fleeting moment, it’s still a good time if we head in the right direction. Every industry goes through phases, and the film industry is going through this one. The ones who rise during this time are the ones who matter.

Mayapuri is completing 50 years. What are your thoughts on that?

Sunny Deol: Mayapuri has completed 50 years, which is a long journey, and it is still relevant. Obviously, things have changed. We’ve moved to digital platforms, but the format remains the same—delivering good news, mostly related to the world of cinema. I wish Mayapuri all the best for completing 50 years.

Randeep Hooda: Congratulations to Mayapuri on 50 wonderful and successful years. This is truly a big journey, and during this time, you’ve not only brought important news from the world of cinema but also won the hearts of readers. I hope you continue to entertain us in the same way as you did with print media.

Vineet Kumar Singh: 50 years is a long time. These days, things change in 3-5 years, but Mayapuri has maintained its identity for 50 years, which is a huge accomplishment. I wish the entire team lots of success. Your magazine always had fantastic posters, which we would eagerly tear out and put up in our hostel rooms. It was a special experience for us. Your work has always connected and impacted people. Thank you for this journey, and I wish you the best for the future.

'Jaat' starring Sunny Deol and Randeep Hooda is set to release on April 10, 2025, in theaters.
