‘Ghar wali Ped wali’ Star Priyamvada Kant Says Her Witch Role Breaks All Stereotypes

Popular TV actress Priyamvada Kant is back on screen in a completely new and unique avatar. Known for her work in historical comedy, Priyamvada is now seen playing a witch in the supernatural comedy show Gharwali Pedwali. In a recent conversation with Mayapuri Magazine journalist Shilpa Nalamwar, the actress spoke openly about this unusual role, the show’s uniqueness, the physical challenges she faced, and her bonding with co-stars. Here’s what she had to say:

How different is your character in Gharwali Pedwali from your previous roles?

This character is very beautiful and extremely interesting. I have done comedy shows before, but those were historical comedies. This, however, is a supernatural comedy, and I have never played a supernatural character before. So, I had to forget all my previous characters and create an entirely new approach.

The word “witch” usually sounds scary. How is this character different?

When we hear the word witch, we usually think of fear or revenge. But this witch is very cute, cultured, and innocent. She is probably the first witch on television who is always seen wearing a bridal outfit. She looks beautiful, and her style is completely different from anything we’ve seen before.

What was the biggest challenge in playing this role?

The biggest challenge was physical. I had to hang on a harness, climb trees, sit on ceilings, and hang upside down on ladders—all while wearing a heavy bridal lehenga weighing around 10 kilos. In daily soaps, even wedding sequences can be exhausting for actresses, but here I have to remain in wedding attire throughout the entire show.

How did you work on the body language and dialogue delivery of this character?

I had to think deeply about how she would walk, talk, laugh, and what her attitude would be like. This is not a character we’ve seen before—she’s not like a friend or an aunt. Everything had to be created from scratch. I worked on every small detail to make the character feel real and entertaining.

Were you scared while attempting such a new experiment?

Absolutely. Doing things that have already worked is easy. But this character is very different. It’s a family comedy show where the supernatural element is visible to only one character. I was worried about how people would perceive it. But now that the show has released on ZEE5 and is receiving an amazing response, all those fears have faded.

What is special about the “double” element in the show?

Everything in this show is double—double mothers, double fathers. So, I hope we receive double, triple, and quadruple love from the audience. Every actor’s comic timing is fantastic.

How is your bonding with co-stars Paras Arora and Seerat Kapoor?

Paras and Seerat are both wonderful people. Paras is an old friend, and we always wanted to work together. His comic timing is brilliant. Seerat and I may be enemies on screen, but off-screen we share a great bond and enjoy working together.
