Kartik Aaryan & Kabir Khan Promote New Film Releasing June 14

You are working with Kabir Khan for the first time, how was the experience of working with him and what was your reaction when a phenomenal director like Kabir Khan approached you for the role of Chandu in 'Chandu Champion'?

Kartik- Working with Kabir Khan is a big deal for me. When we met for the first time, I did not know that Sir was offering me a film, I thought Sir had called me to meet just like that. After I met him, our discussion started about some ideas and the meeting of 20 to 25 people lasted for two to two and a half hours. During that time Sir told me the idea of this film and I was very excited about it. When Sir told me about its story, I asked Sir whether this was a real story or a fictional story. Sir told me that this is a real story. After that, I became very interested in doing this film.

Before this, you have done films with comedy and a chocolate boy image. This is your first biopic. You are hydrophobic but for this film, you also learned swimming and you also did your physical transformation. How was your journey with this film?

Kartik - For me, the prep was full of a lot of discomfort, difficulty, and struggle. I am not hydrophobic but I am afraid of deep water. I never thought that I would be able to do something related to swimming and I never thought that I would do something related to boxing and I never thought that I would do everything together in one film. All these were very demanding things and everything had to be learned like a professional. All my opponents in the film were also professionals. Because all my opponents in the film were real athletes, so it was a very difficult task for me to match their level. In this, I did everything that I had never done in any film before. It was very important to give time to this film because while doing this film I could neither do any project nor think about anything else. In the first one and a half years when I was preparing for this film, I could not shoot anything else. My routine was set for gym training, boxing training, swimming training, and diet and so during that time, I did not have time for anything else. A lot of hard work has gone into this, this is the toughest role of my career. I just want people to come to watch this film in the theatre on 14th June and I hope that this film entertains them and inspires them.

Sajid Nadiadwala's banner has always made films on good topics. You had earlier worked with him in 'Satyaprem Ki Katha'. How was your experience working with the Sajid Nadiadwala banner?

Kartik - It has been a very good experience and we hope it continues like this in the future as well. 'Satyaprem Ki Katha' is a successful film which is still getting love, I think that journey started very well. I want 'Chandu Champion' to be an even bigger successful film and this journey should be made even more beautiful. We should do more films. He gives a lot of power to his films and I would like to work with him again and again.

When you thought of making 'Chandu Champion', did you think of casting Kartik Aryan or did you have any other actor in mind?

Kabir- I do not cast any actors based on their previous films. In my films, actors always play characters that they have never played before, be it Salman Khan in 'Bajrangi Bhaijaan' or Ranveer Singh in '83'. I saw the uniqueness I needed for 'Chandu Champion' in Kartik, so I knew that Kartik would do this role. There were some elements that I needed which are only in Kartik at the moment and I had to bring them out and they have come out very well. This whole experience was very good because it was a journey of discovery for both of us together. Chandu Champion is a film that has come out exactly the way we wanted it. I believe that a good film captures 90% of its script, in this, we feel that we have gone 110%. That's why we are very happy with this film.

How difficult is it to shift from one character to another?

Kartik - Physically it was difficult for me because I had gained weight for 'Freddie' and I had to lose weight for Chandu Champion. Losing weight became very difficult for me externally. Internally also it happens that sometimes you get so involved in a character that you start thinking like him or talking like him. Many such small things take some time to change. After the shooting of Chandu Champion was over, when I went to the set of Bhool Bhulaiyaa, I started feeling whether I was acting too much because Bhool Bhulaiyaa is a comedy film and the way of working in it is a little different. In different films, different methods have to be adopted for different characters. I am a director's actor, I do whatever the director tells me to do and that is why you are seeing me in a new avatar in this.

At the end of the trailer, your character has an old look, tell us something about it.

Kartik - That is a surprise for the film. I enjoyed playing the old part. It was fun shooting that portion because it had a different tone. I think that is an important part of the film. My audience has never seen me in such a character, so it is something very different. The not-so-fun part of this old part was that it took 6 hours to get into the prosthetic. If the call time was 10 o'clock, then my team and I had to come at 4 in the morning so that I could get ready with that prosthetic. It took a lot of time but I enjoyed shooting it.
