Sandeepa Dhar on ‘Naina’: How This Role Gave My Career a Completely New Identity

Talented Bollywood and OTT actress Sandeepa Dhar is currently in the limelight for her film ‘Do Diwane Seher Mein.’ Her role ‘Naina’ has won widespread praise from both audiences and critics. On the love her character ‘Naina’ is receiving

I truly feel that this era recognizes performance more than ever. Earlier, discussions were mostly about the hero or heroine, but now audiences give importance to the story and the acting. Today, any actor who brings depth and authenticity to their character is appreciated openly. The character ‘Naina’ was very special and challenging for me. It was a layered role—glamorous and confident on the outside, yet with many emotional layers within. Returning to the big screen after a long time was very special and emotional for me. Seeing the audience’s reactions and hearing their applause in the cinema hall is the greatest satisfaction for any actor.

In the climax confrontation scene with Mrunal Thakur

That scene was the turning point of the film. I knew I had limited screen time, and within that I had to convey the character’s emotional journey to the audience. We shot the nearly five-minute scene in a single take because the director wanted the emotions to flow continuously.

On working with co-stars Mrunal Thakur and Siddhant Chaturvedi

Mrunal Thakur is extremely talented and hardworking. The most remarkable thing about her is that she delivers brilliant scenes effortlessly, without overacting. Her acting has a natural ease and authenticity that touches the heart directly. She is also highly professional and cooperative on set. I share a great bond with her; we are good friends, and she often sends me reels. I hope this bond continues and that we work together in the future.

Siddhant Chaturvedi also delivered a fantastic performance. His role was not easy, but he portrayed it very realistically. The overall environment on set with the cast and supporting actors was positive and stress-free.

On working with a visionary like Sanjay Leela Bhansali

Every actor dreams of working with a legendary director like Sanjay Leela Bhansali. His sets are grand and beautiful, with a unique approach to lighting, music, and presenting each scene, making the film extraordinary. In this film, I was presented in a glamorous avatar, which was a new and memorable experience for me. Playing such a character was special for my career. I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with him and hope to collaborate again in the future.

Upcoming projects

You will soon see me in the Netflix series ‘Chumbak,’ directed by Aatish Kapadia. It is a fun and crazy comedy show, and working with Aatish sir has been a wonderful experience—his writing and direction are amazing. I am also part of the T-Series film ‘Laxman Hotel,’ which is quite different and interesting. In addition, I am working on a film based on a village story.
