Rahul Sharma Opens Up On New Role In Star Plus’s Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai
Appearing in a new role in Star Plus’s Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, actor Rahul Sharma has been overwhelmed by the affection and response from viewers. In a recent media interaction, he opened up about his new role, his experience on the show, personal life, and the support from his fans. Let’s find out what he had to say…
What was the biggest reason for choosing this role?
The most exciting part was that this character matches about 60-70% with my own personality, so it was easy for me to portray it. Also, I hadn’t played such a role in the past 5–6 years. After ‘Mitegi Laxman Rekha’, this is the first time I got the chance to do something like this again, which feels refreshing for both me and the audience.
How has the audience responded after you joined the show?
Honestly, in the beginning I had no idea how big this show was. I knew Rajan sir, but within just 5 days of being on set, I received such an overwhelming response that I was surprised. Getting so much love for my character in just one month is extremely special for me.
How was your experience working with Rajan Shahi?
Amazing. Everything in his work is clear and well-organized. He puts in a lot of effort into the characters and the script, which is the biggest foundation for an actor to deliver a good performance.
How challenging is it to perform emotional scenes continuously in a daily soap?
It’s quite tough. Doing 18–19 scenes a day and maintaining 80–90% intensity is a big deal. Giving 100% in every single scene isn’t always possible, but performing well on average is itself a big achievement.
Who is your favorite co-star on the show?
I enjoy spending time with Anita ji and listening to her stories. I also share a good professional bond with Abhira, i.e., Samriddhi Shukla. She’s extremely hardworking, and I respect her a lot.
Any memorable off-camera incident you’d like to share?
There are a lot of dogs on the set. Initially, I wasn’t used to it. Once, during a shoot, suddenly a dog or maybe a cat jumped on me. That’s when I realized that being around animals here is quite common.
What kind of roles would you like to do in the future?
Now I don’t decide in advance what I want to do — I just pick from the good opportunities that come my way. But I would like to explore superhero roles, grey-shaded characters, psychological thrillers like Kaal Bhairav, and stories about vampires or outer space.
What message would you like to give to your fans?
You all are amazing. This is the first time I’ve seen such a powerful audience. When you give so much love and respect, respond to negative comments with the same energy. You’ve made this show special — thank you for that.
After these questions, Rahul also played a rapid-fire round, where he gave many fun answers.
If you had to describe your character in one word?
“Impossible.”
Tea or coffee?
Coffee.
Who is your favorite cricketer?
Earlier, Rahul Dravid was my favorite. Now it’s Mahendra Singh Dhoni. I also like Virat Kohli, but I’m more a fan of the old cricket era with players like Yuvraj Singh, Sourav Ganguly, Anil Kumble, and Harbhajan Singh.
Your favorite food?
Indian food, especially my mother’s cooking and now my wife’s. Whatever she makes is delicious.
Your favorite Bollywood movie?
Veer-Zaara — it’s been my favorite for the last 20 years.
A good or bad habit you have?
I think I overdo everything a little — even in friendship, I tend to put in extra effort from my side.
Your all-time favorite co-stars?
Preeti Chaudhary, Saanchi, and Charu.
If you weren’t an actor, what would you be?
I would be doing something somewhere — maybe I’d be a director or a writer.
Any special fan moment?
Yes, once in Himachal, I was surrounded by 15 female fans. Another time, at the Trimbakeshwar Temple, people were looking at me instead of Lord Shiva.
